Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A HEISTThe armored Maybach glided through the Chicago traffic like a silent predator cutting through a school of fish.

Inside, the partition between the driver and the back seat was up, creating a private, soundproof sanctuary. The heating was dialed up high, immediately thawing the chill from Claire's bones.
Dominic sat across from her, the thick blue folder resting unopened on his lap. His dark coat was unbuttoned, revealing a tailored charcoal suit and a silk tie that looked entirely too expensive for a man who controlled the city's docks and underground logistics.
"You brought the folder," Dominic noted, his dark eyes tracing the tired lines around her eyes.
"Rebecca told me not to," Claire said, staring out the window as the snow-dusted skyscrapers of downtown blurred past. "She said it was a divorce settlement, not a criminal indictment. But Grant thought he could slip a modification past us. He thought he could bury the Harbor Lights Foundation audit in a sea of administrative clauses."
"Grant is a vulture in a Brioni suit," Dominic said smoothly. "He always has been. He took your mother's inheritance, he took your administrative genius, and he built a charitable empire on the backs of sick children just to fund his mistress's lifestyle and his high-society ambitions."
Claire turned her head sharply, her breath catching in her throat. "How do you know about my mother’s inheritance? How do you know about the foundation's accounts?"
Dominic reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, encrypted tablet, sliding it across the polished wood console between them. The screen lit up, displaying a complex, sprawling web of offshore accounts, shell corporations, and wire transfers routed through the Cayman Islands and Liechtenstein.
"Because for the last eleven months, Claire, while you were quietly investigating your husband... I was quietly investigating him too," Dominic said quietly.
Claire stared at the screen, her heart hammering against her ribs. The data points were crystalline, neat, and utterly damning. Every single missing dollar from the Harbor Lights Children's Fund—millions of dollars intended for pediatric cancer treatments and heart surgeries—was meticulously mapped, tracked, and tied directly back to Grant Mercer's private dummy corporations.
"You... you've been tracking him?" Claire whispered.
"I’ve been tracking us," Dominic corrected, his gaze burning into hers. "Four years ago, when I walked away to protect my business from a federal trap, I left people behind to watch over you. When Grant started stepping out, when he started bleeding your life's work dry to fund Lauren Price's lavish lifestyle, my people sent word. I gave you the space to fight your own battles because I know how fiercely independent you are, Claire. But I promised myself the day you walked out of that courthouse a free woman, my war would begin."
"This isn't your war, Dominic," Claire said, pulling back slightly, though her hands hovered over the tablet. "This is about justice for those children. This is about exposing Grant for the fraud he is."
"And what do you think I do, Claire?" Dominic asked, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I don't just protect cargo. I settle accounts. Grant Mercer thinks he’s untouchable because he sits on charity boards with city councilmen. But by tomorrow morning, every single asset he owns—every stock, every property, every hidden account—won't just be frozen. They'll be mine."
Claire looked from the terrifying, magnificent man sitting across from her back to the glowing screen of financial execution.
She had spent twelve years playing by the rules, trusting the system, and believing in civilized decorum.
The system had given Grant a slap on the wrist and a mistress with a stolen diamond bracelet.
