Chapter 14 - The Wrath of Voss

The two mercenaries holding Belle froze, glancing nervously at each other before reaching for their sidearms.
They never cleared their holsters.
Harlan moved with the terrifying speed of a striking predator. He closed the distance across the bunker in three massive strides, grabbing the first mercenary by the tactical vest and hurling him bodily into a concrete pillar with a sickening crunch of bone.
The second man tried to pivot, raising his submachine gun toward Belle, but I threw my entire weight forward, slamming my elbow into his ribs. He stumbled, and that split-second distraction was all Harlan needed.
Harlan caught the man by the throat, lifting him two feet off the ground with one hand before slamming him down onto the floor so hard the concrete fractured beneath them.
The man holding me released his grip, shoving me aside as he scrambled for a flashbang grenade on his belt.
I didn't hesitate. I dropped to the floor, scooped up my dropped Glock, and fired two precise rounds into his thigh. He collapsed with a muffled scream, clutching his leg as blood pooled rapidly on the floor.
Within ten seconds, the entire assault team had been neutralized.
The bunker fell into a suffocating, heavy silence, broken only by the harsh sound of Harlan’s breathing. He stood amidst the debris, his knuckles dripping with blood, his chest heaving.
Slowly, he turned around.
Belle broke free from my side and ran across the room, throwing her arms around Harlan’s legs. "Daddy!"
Harlan dropped to his knees instantly, scooping her into his arms, burying his face in her hair as his broad shoulders trembled slightly with suppressed emotion. He looked up at me, his eyes wide and wild, scanning my face for any sign of injury.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice cracking slightly.
"I'm fine," I breathed, walking over and kneeling beside them, wrapping my arms around both of my worlds. "We're both fine."

Harlan pulled us both against his chest, holding us so tightly I could barely breathe. But as I looked over his shoulder at the ruined communication console, the screen was still blinking.
Arthur Sterling’s voice echoed through the static one last time: "That was just a preview, Harlan. Come find us at the old railyard. Alone."
