Chapter 5 - Unmasked

The captured intruder was dragged down into the subterranean holding cells beneath Talon Tower, a place where the city's laws didn't seem to apply. I sat in Harlan’s private study, nursing a cup of black coffee while the lingering smell of cordite hung heavy in the air.

The door pushed open, and Harlan walked in, his sleeves still rolled up, his knuckles stained with fresh blood. He washed his hands at the private wet bar, drying them with a linen towel before turning to face me.

"He talked," Harlan said simply, pouring himself a finger of scotch.

"Who sent them?" I asked, leaning forward on the leather sofa.

"Victor Vance."

The name alone made the air leave the room. Victor Vance was Harlan’s primary rival in the Detroit underworld—a ruthless shipping tycoon tied up in international smuggling and human trafficking. For years, Vance and Voss had maintained a fragile, bloody stalemate.

"Why target Belle?" I whispered, horror washing over me. "She’s a child."

"Because Vance knows my empire is impenetrable as long as I have no soft spots," Harlan replied, his voice dropping into a dangerous purr. "Belle is my only weakness. Or so he thought."

He walked over, stopping right in front of the sofa, looking down at me with an intensity that felt like physical weight.

"You saved her twice now, Rue. Once in that garage, and once tonight." Harlan crouched down so we were eye-to-eye. "Vance knows you’re in my life now. That makes you a target."

"Then fire me," I said, though my voice lacked conviction. "Send me back to my crappy apartment with my eviction notice. Let me go."

Harlan’s jaw tightened. He reached out, his warm fingers wrapping around my wrist, pulling my hand gently against his chest so I could feel the violent, heavy thud of his heart.

"I don't let go of what’s mine, Rue," he whispered fiercely. "And you belong with us now. Vance has made this personal. Which means I’m going to dismantle his entire operation, brick by brick, until there’s nothing left of him."

"And what happens to me while you do that?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat.

"You stay right by my side," Harlan answered, his eyes locking onto my lips. "Where I can keep you safe."

Before I could process the gravity of his words, the study door swung open, and little Belle sleepily padded into the room, rubbing her eyes with her small fists.

"Daddy? Can Rue sleep in my room tonight? I had a bad dream."

Harlan looked at me, a rare, softening expression flickering across his iron features before he scooped Belle into his arms. He looked back at me and nodded toward the hallway.

"Come on," Harlan said softly. "Let’s keep our girls safe."
