Chapter 16 - Checkmate

Arthur Sterling’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, venomous snarl. "Kill them."

The guards raised their weapons, but before their fingers could even twitch toward the triggers, the surrounding darkness erupted into blinding white light.

Dozens of high-intensity tactical spotlights flashed on simultaneously from the top of the rusted freight cars, blinding Sterling’s men. At the same time, the distinct, rhythmic thrum of chopper rotors drowned out the wind as two heavy-duty corporate security helicopters hovered overhead, their spotlights locking directly onto Sterling.

From the shadows between the railcars, Miller and a dozen elite operatives stepped out, their assault rifles leveled squarely at Sterling’s guards.

"Drop your weapons!" Miller’s voice boomed through the megaphone. "The perimeter is secured. You’re completely surrounded."

Sterling’s guards looked around in sheer panic. Within seconds, weapons clattered onto the frozen gravel as they raised their hands.

Arthur Sterling stood frozen, his cane trembling in his grip as he looked up at the overwhelming force surrounding him. "This... this is illegal! You can't touch me! I own judges, politicians, police chiefs—"

"You used to," Harlan interrupted, walking slowly toward the aging patriarch until he towered over him. "But Detroit doesn't belong to the past anymore, Arthur. It belongs to the people who survive in it."

Harlan didn't strike him. He didn't have to. He pulled a sleek tablet from his coat pocket, tapping the screen once.

"As of thirty seconds ago, the Voss Foundation has acquired every single remaining debt, property, and asset tied to the Sterling family trust," Harlan said coldly. "Your bank accounts are frozen. Your mansions are being seized by federal marshals. You are officially bankrupt, powerless, and forgotten."

Sterling stumbled back, clutching his chest as the color drained entirely from his face. "You... you destroyed us..."

"No," Harlan corrected softly, turning back to take my hand. "You destroyed yourselves when you decided to touch my family."
