Chapter 6 - The Viper's Nest

Three days after the attack, the city of Detroit felt like a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding. Harlan had vanished into the subterranean depths of his empire for thirty-six straight hours, leaving me and Belle under the tight watch of his most trusted head of security, a towering ex-marine named Miller.

By Thursday evening, Miller intercepted a heavily encrypted data packet routed through Vance’s shipping docks on the Detroit River.

"Vance is moving a massive cargo shipment out of Terminal 4 tonight," Miller told me, sliding a tactical tablet across the kitchen island. "Harlan is already moving in to intercept, but Vance has set a trap. He knows Harlan is coming."

"A trap?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat. "Is Harlan walking into an ambush?"

"Vance has hostages—family members of Harlan’s inner circle," Miller replied grimly. "If Harlan breaches the main warehouse, they trigger the explosives."

I looked down the hallway where Belle was softly singing to her porcelain doll. I couldn't just sit here and wait while the man who had given me a second chance walked into a slaughterhouse.

"Miller, get me my coat."

"Rue, Mr. Voss explicitly ordered—"

"I don't care what Harlan ordered!" I snapped, grabbing my car keys from the counter. "He’s walking into a suicide mission because of me. We are going to Terminal 4, and you are going to drive me."

Miller stared at me for three long seconds, a slow, grim smile spreading across his scarred face. "Damn. You really are just like him."

Twenty minutes later, a heavily armored SUV tore through the industrial sprawl of the Detroit waterfront, sliding to a halt in the shadows just fifty yards away from Terminal 4’s corrugated steel gates.

Through my binoculars, I could see Harlan standing in the center of the loading bay, his tailored suit jacket discarded, his broad shoulders stark under the flickering industrial lights. Surrounding him were a dozen of Vance’s mercenaries, their assault rifles leveled at his chest.

And standing behind them, holding a detonator with a glowing red LED light, was Victor Vance himself—a sleek, snake-like man with a permanent, mocking smirk carved into his face.

"Welcome, Harlan!" Vance’s voice echoed across the cavernous warehouse through a megaphone. "Did you really think you could step into my territory and walk away?"

Harlan didn't flinch. His hands hung loosely at his sides, his posture radiating pure, unadulterated menace. "Let the hostages go, Vance. This is between you and me."

"Oh, it’s much bigger than that now," Vance laughed darkly, pressing his thumb against the detonator casing. "When I blow this place to kingdom come, your entire empire goes up in smoke with you."

I slammed the SUV door open, ignoring Miller’s frantic warning, and stepped directly out into the blinding glare of the warehouse floodlights.

"Hey, snake-face!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Every single weapon in the warehouse instantly swiveled toward me. Harlan’s head snapped around, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror.

"Rue—no!" Harlan roared, a sound so primal and filled with terror that it froze the blood in my veins.
