Chapter 17 - Dawn over the Motor City

Three weeks later, the snow finally blanketed Detroit in a pristine, quiet white, washing away the grit and the scars of the past war.

I stood on the balcony of Talon Tower, holding a mug of hot coffee while watching the morning sun break over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

The heavy glass door slid open, and footsteps padded softly across the hardwood floor. A pair of small arms wrapped around my waist.

"Good morning, Mommy," Belle chirped happily, looking up at me with her bright, healthy eyes.

"Good morning, sweetheart," I smiled, lifting her up onto the balcony ledge so she could see the city stretching out beneath us.

A moment later, Harlan stepped out onto the terrace. He wore a simple gray sweater instead of his usual intimidating three-piece suit. He looked relaxed, the heavy burden of the past few years finally lifted from his broad shoulders.

He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around both of us, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" Harlan whispered, kissing my cheek.

"I was just thinking about that freezing night in the Meridian Theater garage," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace. "If my manager hadn't kept me late... if I hadn't missed that last bus... I never would have found her. I never would have found you."

Harlan turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes shining with deep, unwavering affection.

"That wasn't bad luck, Rue," Harlan murmured, his fingers gently brushing a strand of hair from my face. "That was destiny. The best thing that ever happened to this city—and to me—started with a broke waitress with fifteen dollars in her pocket."

Belle giggled, throwing her arms around both of our necks. "And now we're a family forever!"

"Forever," Harlan and I echoed together.

Down below, the city of Detroit hummed with life—bustling streets, shining skyscrapers, and a future built not on fear, but on survival, loyalty, and an unbreakable love that had risen from the ashes.
