CHAPTER 3 — THE BILLIONAIRE DECLARED WAR ON HIS OWN FAMILY

Arthur Sterling had spent his entire career defeating ruthless competitors.

But he had never imagined the greatest enemy of his life would be his own mother.

The tiny fingers wrapped around his thumb refused to let go.

The little boy looked up at Arthur with innocent blue eyes that mirrored his own.

Arthur felt something inside him break.

Not from weakness.

From regret.

Five years.

Five birthdays he had never celebrated.

Five winters his children had survived without him.

Five years that could never be returned.

Madeline gently lifted the sleepy boy into her arms.

"His name is Noah," she whispered.

She pointed to the little girl sleeping beside him.

"That's Grace."

Then to the smallest baby.

"And this is Ethan."

Arthur repeated each name quietly, afraid he might never deserve to say them again.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered.

Madeline looked at him for a long moment.

"I've imagined hearing those words for years."

"Do they change anything?"

Arthur lowered his eyes.

"No."

"But maybe they can be the beginning."

Before Madeline could answer, Eleanor stood.

"I've done terrible things," she admitted, her voice shaking. "But I never wanted the children to suffer."

Madeline's expression hardened.

"They suffered because you made sure they did."

Arthur turned toward his mother.

"Go home."

"Arthur..."

"I said go home."

For the first time in his life, Eleanor obeyed without another word.

She walked away through the crowded park, looking smaller with every step.

Arthur remained beside the bench.

"I want to help," he said quietly.

Madeline gave a tired smile.

"You think money fixes everything."

"It doesn't."

"I know."

"Then what do you want?"

Arthur looked directly into her eyes.

"A chance."

She studied him.

"I've heard promises before."

"This time," Arthur answered, "judge me by what I do."

Just then, Noah began coughing violently.

The tiny child struggled to catch his breath.

His face quickly turned pale.

Madeline immediately held him close.

"It started again..."

Arthur's heart raced.

"What started?"

"The fever."

She reached into the diaper bag and pulled out an empty prescription bottle.

"The hospital said he needs surgery."

Arthur grabbed the bottle.

His face froze.

The estimated cost was nearly two hundred thousand dollars.

He looked up in disbelief.

"Why didn't you ask anyone for help?"

Madeline laughed bitterly.

"I did."

"I asked every charity."

"Every hospital."

"I even came to Sterling Foundation headquarters."

Arthur frowned.

"My foundation?"

"They said there were no funds available."

Arthur stared at the logo printed on the paperwork.

It was his own charitable organization.

The charity that donated millions every year.

Someone had rejected his own son.

Arthur pulled out his phone.

"Get me the Chief Financial Officer."

Thirty seconds later the CFO answered nervously.

"Mr. Sterling?"

"I want every financial record from Sterling Foundation on my desk within one hour."

"Sir... is something wrong?"

Arthur's voice became ice cold.

"If a single employee denied medical treatment to my child..."

"...everyone involved is finished."

The call ended.

Madeline looked at him in silence.

For the first time...

She saw the billionaire.

Not the man who abandoned her.

The man who could move mountains.

What neither of them noticed...

Across the street...

A black SUV had been parked since Arthur arrived.

Inside, a man wearing dark sunglasses lowered a camera.

He had photographed everything.

He picked up his phone.

"They've found each other," he said.

A calm voice answered.

"Then activate Phase Two."

The call disconnected.

The SUV quietly disappeared into Manhattan traffic.

Neither Arthur nor Madeline had any idea...

May you like

Someone far more dangerous than Eleanor Sterling had just entered their lives.
