CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ACCOUNT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Arthur didn't go back to his penthouse.

He took Madeline and the triplets directly to the finest children's hospital in New York.

Within minutes, the hospital director personally greeted them.

Doctors surrounded Noah immediately.

Grace and Ethan were examined as well.

Arthur refused to leave.

Hours later...

The chief pediatric surgeon walked into the waiting room.

"Mr. Sterling..."

Arthur stood instantly.

"How is my son?"

The doctor smiled.

"He'll recover."

Arthur closed his eyes in relief.

Then the doctor's expression changed.

"There is something else."

He placed a thick folder on the table.

"This belongs to your family."

Arthur frowned.

"My family?"

"It arrived anonymously five years ago."

The envelope had been marked:

Only release if Arthur Sterling ever asks about Madeline Hayes.

Arthur's pulse quickened.

Inside were hundreds of documents.

Medical bills.

Eviction notices.

Rejected job applications.

Court filings.

And dozens of letters.

Letters Madeline had written to Arthur.

Every single one had been returned unopened.

Stamped with the same words:

Recipient unavailable.

Arthur looked toward his mother, who had quietly arrived at the hospital.

She burst into tears before he even spoke.

"I didn't burn them," she cried.

"I swear."

Arthur stared at the stack.

"If not you..."

"...then who?"

Near the bottom of the folder was one final document.

A monthly bank statement.

Arthur almost missed it.

The account holder's name made his blood freeze.

STERLING FAMILY LEGACY TRUST.

Every month...

For five years...

Someone had transferred fifty thousand dollars into a confidential account.

Not to help Madeline.

Not to support the children.

But to a private investigation company.

The payment description was only four words.

Continuous Family Surveillance Program.

Arthur's hands began shaking.

"They were watching her..."

"They watched my children..."

"For five years."

The hospital room suddenly felt unbearably cold.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Arthur answered.

A deep male voice spoke calmly.

"You've opened a door that should have stayed closed."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"Who is this?"

The man ignored the question.

"If you want Madeline and the children to stay alive..."

"...stop looking into the Legacy Trust."

The line went dead.

Arthur slowly lowered the phone.

He turned toward the window.

Outside the hospital...

The same black SUV from Central Park sat across the street.

Its headlights flashed once.

Then it drove away.

Arthur finally understood.

This had never been about a broken relationship.

It had never been about money.

Someone had spent five years hiding the existence of his children.

And that someone was terrified...

May you like

...because Arthur Sterling had finally started asking questions.
