CHAPTER 7 — THE WAREHOUSE TRAP

Arthur didn't wait for the police to build a case.

He didn't call another board meeting.

He didn't care about the billion-dollar merger scheduled for the next morning.

For the first time in his life...

Nothing mattered except Madeline and the triplets.

Within minutes, every private security resource owned by Sterling Development was activated.

Former military consultants.

Drone operators.

Cybersecurity analysts.

Retired investigators.

Arthur transformed his corporate headquarters into a command center.

The anonymous video was projected onto a massive screen.

"Replay it."

Again.

And again.

Most people focused on Madeline.

Arthur focused on everything else.

The rust on the steel beams.

A faded shipping logo.

The distant sound of a train horn.

A flashing red warning light reflected in a puddle.

One analyst suddenly paused the video.

"Zoom in."

Hidden behind Madeline's chair was a weathered metal sign.

Only three letters remained visible.

R... D... C.

Another analyst searched abandoned industrial properties across New York.

Less than two minutes later, a match appeared.

Riverside Distribution Center.

Closed for nearly twelve years.

Arthur grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going."

The lead security officer stepped in front of him.

"Sir, it could be an ambush."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"They already have my family."

"What more can they take?"

Thirty minutes later, a convoy of black SUVs rolled silently through an abandoned industrial district along the river.

The warehouse stood in darkness.

Broken windows.

Collapsed loading docks.

Silence.

Almost too much silence.

Arthur entered first.

"Dad..."

A tiny voice echoed through the building.

His heart stopped.

"Noah?"

The voice came again.

"Daddy..."

Arthur ran toward it.

His security team shouted for him to stop.

Too late.

The floor beneath him collapsed.

Concrete shattered.

Arthur crashed nearly fifteen feet into an old maintenance tunnel.

Pain shot through his shoulder.

Dust filled the air.

Above him, armed men appeared along the edge of the opening.

One slow clap echoed through the darkness.

A tall silver-haired man stepped into the light.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Cold eyes.

"Welcome, Arthur."

Arthur struggled to stand.

"Who are you?"

The stranger smiled.

"My name is Victor Langford."

"I helped your father build the Sterling empire."

He paused.

"And I helped destroy anyone who threatened it."

Arthur stared at him.

"You kidnapped my family."

Victor chuckled.

"No."

"I rescued them."

Arthur frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Victor tossed a thick folder into the pit.

Arthur opened it.

Inside were surveillance photos.

Dozens of them.

Some were only days old.

Others dated back five years.

Every photograph showed the same thing.

Madeline and the children...

Being secretly protected.

Arthur looked up in confusion.

Victor's voice became unexpectedly calm.

"You've been chasing the wrong enemy."

Arthur's heartbeat quickened.

"If you didn't take them..."

Victor's expression darkened.

"Then someone else did."

Before Arthur could speak...

A deafening explosion ripped through the warehouse.

The ceiling shook violently.

Steel beams crashed to the floor.

Victor's bodyguards immediately surrounded him.

"Move!" one shouted.

Another explosion erupted outside.

Arthur climbed out of the collapsed tunnel just in time to see flames consuming one side of the building.

The convoy of Sterling security vehicles was under attack.

Masked gunmen had surrounded the entire property.

Victor looked directly at Arthur.

"They've found us."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Victor answered with only four words.

May you like

"The people behind everything."
