CHAPTER 8 — THE ENVELOPE THAT CHANGED THE PAST

Smoke poured through the warehouse.

Arthur and Victor escaped through an underground service tunnel while the firefight raged outside.

When they finally emerged nearly half a mile away, Victor unlocked an old storage unit hidden beneath a deserted repair garage.

Inside...

There were shelves filled with sealed boxes.

Newspaper clippings.

Court records.

Photographs.

Arthur slowly looked around.

"What is this place?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Your father's insurance policy."

He opened a fireproof safe.

Inside rested one large envelope.

Across the front, in Arthur's father's unmistakable handwriting, were seven words.

Open only if my family is threatened.

Arthur carefully broke the seal.

The first page was a handwritten letter.

Arthur, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you. The danger was never your success. It was your bloodline.

Arthur's hands trembled.

The next pages contained DNA reports confirming what he already knew.

Noah.

Grace.

Ethan.

His children.

But another document caught his attention.

It was a birth certificate.

Arthur frowned.

"This can't be right..."

Victor nodded slowly.

"It surprised me too."

The certificate listed the triplets' births nearly two months earlier than Arthur had always believed possible.

The doctor had added a handwritten note explaining that the babies had been delivered prematurely after Madeline collapsed from severe stress and exhaustion.

Arthur closed his eyes.

While he had been celebrating the biggest business deal of his career...

Madeline had been fighting to keep their children alive.

He felt physically sick.

"I should have been there."

Victor placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You should have."

"But someone made certain you never knew."

Before Arthur could ask another question, Victor handed him one final document.

It wasn't from a doctor.

Or a lawyer.

It was a passenger manifest from a private jet.

One name stood out immediately.

Eleanor Sterling.

Departure date:

The same day Madeline was forced out of her apartment.

Arthur frowned.

Then he noticed another passenger listed beneath his mother's name.

His blood ran cold.

Madeline Hayes.

Arthur looked up in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Victor's face hardened.

"It isn't."

"According to the records, someone purchased a ticket in Madeline's name."

"But airport security footage confirms..."

"...she never boarded."

Arthur stared at the page.

"If she wasn't on the plane..."

Victor finished the sentence.

"Then someone wanted the world to believe she had disappeared voluntarily."

At that exact moment, Arthur's secure phone buzzed.

A live video feed opened automatically.

Madeline appeared on the screen.

She was no longer tied up.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

Standing beside her was an unknown woman wearing a dark coat.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then she spoke Arthur's name.

"Arthur..."

"You've spent five years looking for the wrong answers."

She slowly removed her sunglasses.

Arthur froze.

He recognized her instantly from an old family photograph.

She was the younger sister of his late father.

The aunt everyone had claimed died more than twenty years ago.

She gave a faint, mysterious smile.

"I'm alive."

May you like

"And it's finally time you learned why your family has been lying to you for decades."
