CHAPTER 2 — The Baby Who Stole an Empire

The photograph trembled in Vincent Torino's hands.

Not because he was afraid.

Because, for the first time in his life, certainty had abandoned him.

He had built an empire on one unquestionable truth:

He was the eldest son of the Torino bloodline.

The rightful heir.

The man destined to rule.

Now, a single faded photograph threatened to erase forty years of identity.

Emma gently unfolded another document from the envelope.

"This wasn't the only thing hidden."

Vincent snatched it from her.

It was an old hospital registry dated forty-two years earlier.

Two boys had been born just three minutes apart.

One to Isabella Torino.

The wife of mafia patriarch Salvatore Torino.

The other to a young nurse listed only as Elena Rossi.

Across the record, someone had stamped one terrifying word in red ink:

ALTERED.

Marco stared in disbelief.

"Someone switched the babies..."

Emma nodded.

"Not someone."

"Someone inside the family."

Before Vincent could speak, the tunnel shook violently.

BOOM!

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The assassins had detonated explosives in the library above.

"They know you're not dead," Marco shouted.

Automatic gunfire erupted through the mansion.

The trap had failed.

Now the hunters were searching room by room.

Vincent shoved the envelope beneath his jacket.

"Move."

The hidden passage led to an abandoned wine cellar beneath the estate.

As they emerged into the darkness, Emma stopped in front of an ancient stone wall.

She pressed against a loose brick.

A section of the wall slowly slid open.

Behind it...

Rows of locked metal cabinets stretched into the darkness.

Marco stared in amazement.

"What is this place?"

Emma answered quietly.

"The old archive."

Vincent's eyes widened.

His grandfather had supposedly destroyed every historical record decades ago.

Yet here they were.

Perfectly preserved.

Every murder.

Every business deal.

Every betrayal.

Every birth.

Every secret.

Emma walked directly toward Cabinet Number Seven.

She already knew where it was.

Vincent noticed immediately.

"You've been here before."

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

"My mother brought me."

"When?"

"When I was twelve."

Vincent froze.

"Who was your mother?"

Emma slowly pulled a rusted key from around her neck.

She unlocked the cabinet.

Inside lay hundreds of documents...

And one leather journal.

Across its cover was embossed a name Vincent had spent decades trying to erase.

Salvatore Torino.

His father's personal diary.

Vincent opened the first page.

His breath caught.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

"If anyone reads this, it means I failed."

Another page.

"My son was stolen the night he was born."

Another.

"The child I raised is innocent... but he is not my blood."

Vincent's knees nearly gave way.

Every memory of his father flashed before him.

The impossible standards.

The emotional distance.

The strange sadness in Salvatore's eyes during family celebrations.

He had always mistaken it for disappointment.

Now he wondered if it had been grief.

Emma turned another page.

There, taped inside the diary, was a photograph Vincent had never seen.

A young Salvatore stood beside a woman in a nurse's uniform, holding a newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.

Written beneath the photo:

"Forgive me. I had to choose which child would survive."

Vincent whispered,

"What does that mean?"

Emma didn't answer.

Instead, she handed him one final sealed file.

Stamped in black ink:

PROJECT HEIR.

Vincent broke the seal.

Inside was a list of names.

Doctors.

Judges.

Police commissioners.

Politicians.

Every one of them had helped cover up the baby swap.

And every one of them had received millions from Torino accounts.

Marco looked sick.

"This conspiracy... wasn't just the family."

"It was the entire empire."

Just then, footsteps echoed through the archive.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone else knew about the hidden room.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

"You were never supposed to find those files."

Vincent aimed his pistol.

A lone figure stepped into the light.

It wasn't Luca.

It wasn't one of the assassins.

It was an elderly man with silver hair, wearing a bloodstained black overcoat.

He smiled sadly as he looked at Vincent.

Then said six words that shattered the last piece of Vincent's world.

"I've been looking for my son."

Vincent lowered his gun without realizing it.

The stranger looked directly into his eyes.

"I believe..."

"...that son is you."

At that exact moment—

The archive lights went out.

A dozen laser sights appeared in the darkness.

And someone whispered through a radio:

May you like

"Kill everyone. Leave no witnesses."
