CHAPTER 8 – The Daughter's Choice

Red alarms screamed through the bunker.
Hidden compartments opened in every wall.
Automatic weapons emerged from the ceiling.
Laser targeting systems locked onto Vincent...
Sophia...
and Elena.
The computerized voice counted down.
Execution in sixty seconds.
Vincent looked at his father with tears burning in his eyes.
"Why?"
The old man answered quietly.
"Because empires don't fall until the blood that built them disappears."
"You betrayed your own son."
"I saved my granddaughter."
Everyone froze.
Elena stared at him.
"What?"
The old man reached into his coat and removed an old envelope, yellowed with age.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Not Elena's.
Vincent's.
Across the top, stamped in faded ink, were two words that shattered everything.
ADOPTED CHILD.
Vincent's hands began to shake.
"No..."
"My parents..."
The old man interrupted gently.
"We chose you."
"The Circle wanted a ruthless heir."
"I chose an orphan with a kind heart."
Sophia covered her mouth.
"Then... Elena..."
He smiled warmly at her.
"You are my only biological grandchild."
"The last true Moretti."
Vincent stared at Elena.
The daughter he had mourned for twenty-six years...
The maid who had saved his life...
The young woman who had exposed his empire...
She wasn't just his daughter.
She was the legitimate heir to everything.
The old man handed Elena a small bronze key.
"Behind that door is the Core."
"It controls every account..."
"Every weapon..."
"Every secret archive..."
"You have one minute."
"You may destroy it forever..."
"...or rule everything."
The bunker fell silent.
Sophia whispered,
"Choose carefully."
Vincent stepped toward Elena.
His voice broke.
"I've spent my entire life fighting for power."
"It cost me my wife."
"It cost me my family."
"It almost cost me you."
He gently took her hand.
"If you love me..."
"...end it."
Tears streamed down Elena's face.
She slowly walked toward the enormous steel door marked only with one word:
CORE
The bronze key slid into the ancient lock.
The mechanism clicked.
The door began to open.
A brilliant white light flooded the chamber.
Everyone shielded their eyes.
Then...
Elena froze.
Inside the Core wasn't gold.
There were no servers.
No weapons.
No hidden fortune.
Only hundreds of glass incubation chambers...
Filled with sleeping children.
Each child wore a bracelet bearing the crest of one of the twelve families.
A computerized voice echoed through the chamber.
WELCOME, SUCCESSOR.
THE NEXT GENERATION OF THE CIRCLE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
Elena's hands began to tremble.
Destroying the Core...
Would not destroy a criminal empire.
It would kill hundreds of innocent children.
And somewhere in the darkness...
May you like
A child's voice whispered,
"Mom..."
