CHAPTER 1 – The Proposal Everyone Envied

The ballroom erupted into applause as Ethan dropped to one knee.
Crystal chandeliers shimmered overhead. Cameras flashed from every corner. Hundreds of wealthy guests stopped talking, waiting for the answer they already assumed would come.
Sophia smiled gracefully, one elegant hand covering her lips.
She looked like every man's dream.
Ethan opened the velvet ring box.
Inside rested a breathtaking blue diamond worth more than most people earned in a lifetime.
"I've loved you since the day we met," he said, his voice shaking just enough to sound genuine. "Will you marry me?"
The crowd sighed.
Some guests were already wiping away tears.
Sophia slowly extended her hand.
Then...
Her smile disappeared.
She wasn't looking at Ethan anymore.
She was staring inside the ring box.
At first, everyone assumed she was overwhelmed.
But her face turned pale.
Her breathing became uneven.
"What... is this?" she whispered.
Ethan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She reached into the box instead of taking the ring.
Hidden beneath the cushion was a tiny folded piece of paper.
No one had noticed it.
Not even Ethan.
Sophia unfolded it with trembling fingers.
Only five words were written.
"Ask him about Emily Carter."
Her heart nearly stopped.
Emily Carter.
The name Ethan had sworn never existed.
The woman he insisted was only a misunderstanding years ago.
Sophia slowly raised her eyes.
"Who put this in here?"
Ethan stared blankly.
"I... I don't know."
But for the first time since she'd known him...
He looked terrified.
The applause faded into complete silence.
Every guest sensed something had gone terribly wrong.
Sophia closed the ring box.
"I'm not answering your proposal."
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Instead of saying yes...
She turned and walked away.
Leaving Ethan still kneeling on the marble floor—holding a diamond that suddenly meant nothing.

What no one realized...
Was that someone inside the room had been waiting years for this exact moment.
