CHAPTER 3 – The Man Behind the Door

Sophia grabbed the old woman’s arm.
“Hide.”
But it was too late.
Heavy footsteps crossed the porch.
The cottage door swung open.
Ethan stepped inside.
His perfect suit was wrinkled. His eyes were red. The charming billionaire from the ballroom was gone.
“Sophia,” he said quietly. “You should have said yes.”
Sophia backed away.
“You lied to me.”
Ethan looked at the old woman, then at the documents on the table.
His face hardened.
“You had no right to show her that.”
The old woman stood slowly.
“She had every right. You destroyed my granddaughter.”
Ethan laughed coldly.
“Emily destroyed herself.”
Sophia’s heart pounded.
“She’s alive, Ethan. I saw the photo.”
For the first time, Ethan said nothing.
That silence told her everything.
Then a soft voice came from the darkness behind him.
“No, Sophia…”
A woman stepped into the doorway.
Thin. Pale. Beautiful in a broken way.
Emily Carter.
Sophia covered her mouth.
Emily looked at Ethan with tears in her eyes.
“He didn’t hide me because he was ashamed of me,” she whispered.
She turned to Sophia.
“He hid me because I refused to disappear.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched.
“Enough.”
Emily lifted her chin.
“You wanted Sophia’s fortune. Just like you wanted mine.”
Sophia froze.
“My fortune?”
Emily nodded.
“Your father didn’t leave the company to your uncle.”
Sophia’s breath caught.
“He left it to you.”
Ethan’s face twisted with rage.
Sophia finally understood.
The proposal wasn’t love.
It was a trap.
If she married him, Ethan would gain control over everything she didn’t even know she owned.
Then Emily stepped closer and revealed the final secret.
“And the child in that photo…”
Sophia looked at her.
Emily’s voice broke.
“He isn’t Ethan’s son.”
She pointed at Sophia.
“He’s your brother.”
At that moment, police sirens exploded outside.
Ethan turned to run—
But the old woman smiled.
Because the ring box had not only held a note.
It had held a hidden microphone.

And every word Ethan said…
Had just been recorded.
