CHAPTER 5 – The Woman He Never Expected

The courtroom fell silent.

Every camera in the country was pointed at Sophia.

"$12.8 billion... gone in less than three hours."

Reporters called it the biggest corporate theft in American history.

Ethan sat confidently beside his attorney.

He smiled.

"You've already lost, Sophia."

"The money is legally mine."

Sophia didn't answer.

Instead...

She looked toward the back of the courtroom.

Waiting.

Then the heavy wooden doors opened.

An elderly woman in a simple gray coat slowly walked inside.

No jewelry.

No bodyguards.

No makeup.

Just a wooden cane in her hand.

People barely glanced at her.

Until every attorney in the room suddenly stood up.

The judge stood too.

Even the federal prosecutors lowered their heads.

Ethan frowned.

"Who is she?"

His lawyer turned pale.

"Oh... no."

The woman walked directly to Sophia.

"My dear..."

"I'm sorry I arrived so late."

Sophia looked confused.

"I know you?"

The woman smiled gently.

"When you were five years old..."

"You used to call me Grandma Rose."

Sophia's eyes widened.

"But my grandmother died twenty years ago."

The woman slowly removed a silver necklace from beneath her coat.

It carried the Lawson family crest.

"The woman buried in that cemetery..."

"...was never your grandmother."

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

Ethan stood up.

"That's impossible!"

The woman ignored him.

She handed the judge a thick black folder.

Inside were classified government files.

Corporate ownership records.

Secret trust agreements.

And one document that changed everything.

The judge adjusted his glasses.

Then looked directly at Ethan.

"Mr. Cole..."

"According to these records..."

"Miss Sophia Lawson has never been the legal owner of the Lawson fortune."

Ethan burst into laughter.

"I knew it!"

"I told everyone she owned nothing!"

The judge continued reading.

"...because every dollar..."

"...every company..."

"...every patent..."

"...has always belonged to..."

He looked toward the elderly woman.

"Mrs. Rose Lawson."

The courtroom exploded.

The mysterious old woman wasn't just Sophia's grandmother.

She was the true owner of a global empire worth over $180 billion.

For decades...

She had hidden behind fake identities...

Waiting to discover who deserved to inherit everything.

Sophia stared at her in disbelief.

"You were testing me..."

Rose nodded.

"I wanted to know who loved my granddaughter..."

"...and who loved her money."

She slowly turned toward Ethan.

"You failed."

Ethan suddenly laughed again.

"You think you've won?"

He reached into his jacket...

And pulled out a small black remote.

Everyone froze.

"I planned for this."

"You'll never recover your fortune."

He pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

He pressed it again.

Still nothing.

Then a familiar voice echoed through the courtroom speakers.

"Looking for this?"

Everyone turned.

Emily Carter walked in...

Holding the real remote in one hand...

And a laptop in the other.

She smiled.

"While you were busy stealing billions..."

"I emptied every offshore account you created."

Ethan's face turned white.

Emily clicked one key.

A giant courtroom screen lit up.

Thousands of confidential files appeared.

Secret recordings.

Bribery payments.

Judges.

Politicians.

Bank executives.

And one final file...

Named only:

PROJECT PHOENIX.

Emily whispered,

"This was never just about stealing Sophia's fortune."

"It was about taking control of every billionaire family in America."

The courtroom went completely silent.

Then the screen automatically opened the first file...

Revealing a list of names.

Sophia read the very first one...

...and nearly collapsed.

Because at the top of the list...

May you like

Was Rose Lawson.

The woman standing right beside her.
