CHAPTER 4 – The Billion-Dollar Lie

The flashing red and blue lights painted the old cottage walls.

"Police! Nobody move!"

Ethan bolted toward the back door.

He never made it.

Two officers tackled him to the ground before he reached the porch.

Sophia stood frozen, unable to process everything she had heard.

"My... brother?" she whispered.

Emily nodded slowly, tears streaming down her face.

"Twenty-six years ago, your father made a terrible mistake."

The elderly woman reached into an old wooden chest and pulled out another envelope.

Unlike the others, this one was sealed with red wax.

"Your father ordered this to be opened only if something happened to him."

Sophia carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Her father's handwriting.

My dearest Sophia,

If you're reading this, someone has already tried to steal what belongs to our family.

You were never my only child.

The night your mother died giving birth, another baby was taken from the hospital before dawn.

Everyone believed the child had died... because someone inside the hospital was paid to make him disappear.

Sophia's hands began to shake violently.

She continued reading.

That child was your little brother.

She looked at Emily.

"No..."

Emily slowly unfolded another document.

An official DNA report.

Sophia...

97.9% biological sibling match with...

Noah Carter.

The little boy in the faded photograph.

The child Ethan claimed was his son.

Sophia collapsed into a chair.

"My brother has been alive this whole time..."

Emily whispered,

"I adopted Noah to protect him."

"You adopted him?"

Emily nodded.

"The people who stole him weren't after a baby..."

"They were after your father's empire."

The room fell silent.

Then one detective walked inside carrying a black leather briefcase.

"Ms. Lawson..."

"We searched Mr. Ethan Cole's vehicle."

He placed the briefcase on the table.

Inside were forged passports...

Offshore bank records...

Marriage contracts...

And photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

Every woman Ethan had dated over the past fifteen years.

Each one was unbelievably wealthy.

Each relationship ended the same way.

A sudden engagement.

A mysterious financial transfer.

Then...

The woman disappeared from his life.

Some went bankrupt.

Some vanished overseas.

One was still officially listed as missing.

Sophia felt sick.

"I was never the first."

The detective looked her straight in the eyes.

"No."

"You were supposed to be the last."

Before anyone could speak again...

One officer rushed through the door.

"Sir!"

"We've got a problem!"

"Ethan's lawyer just arrived..."

"...with a court order proving Ethan legally owns every company under Sophia's name."

Sophia stared in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

The lawyer smiled confidently as he held up the documents.

"It became legal..."

"...three hours ago."

Sophia's blood ran cold.

She had never signed a single contract.

So how...

The lawyer slowly pulled one item from his briefcase.

The same velvet ring box.

The diamond was gone.

Hidden beneath the empty cushion...

Was a tiny fingerprint scanner.

The moment Sophia had touched the ring...

Her biometric signature had been secretly copied.

And somewhere in the city...

Someone had already used it to transfer a fortune worth $12.8 billion out of her name.

May you like

The proposal had never been about marriage.

It had been the most expensive robbery in American history.
