CHAPTER 1 – The Man Everyone Feared
Daniel Carter ruled Carter Global with one simple philosophy:
"Feelings don't make money. Fear does."
Employees froze whenever they heard his footsteps echo through the executive floor. One mistake meant humiliation. Two mistakes meant unemployment.
Even his six-year-old daughter, Lily, had learned to stay quiet whenever she visited the office.
That Friday afternoon, Lily wandered into the hallway while Daniel finished another board meeting.
She stopped beside an elderly janitor named Mrs. Evelyn.
The old woman was quietly wiping the marble floor, humming a soft lullaby while holding an old blue cleaning cloth.
"You look tired," Lily whispered.
Mrs. Evelyn smiled warmly.
"So do you, sweetheart."
For the first time all day, Lily smiled back.
Daniel stepped out of the conference room and saw them talking.
His face darkened instantly.
"What are you doing?" he barked.
The entire hallway went silent.
Mrs. Evelyn lowered her head.
"I'm sorry, sir. She just wanted to talk."
"I don't pay you to babysit."
"It's only a minute..."
"I said enough!"
Executives, assistants, and interns all stopped to watch.
Daniel ripped the mop from her hands.
"You've become too old, too slow, and too useless."
He turned toward Human Resources.
"Terminate her. Right now."
The old woman quietly removed her company badge.
"I understand."
No arguing.
No begging.
Just quiet dignity.
As security escorted her toward the elevator, Lily suddenly burst into tears.
"Daddy... please don't make Grandma leave."
Daniel froze.
The hallway fell completely silent.
Every executive exchanged confused looks.
Grandma?
Daniel stared at his daughter.
"What... did you just say?"
Lily hugged the old woman tightly.
"The lady Mommy always brings food to..."
"...she said she's my grandma."
Daniel's heart stopped.
Because Lily's real grandmother had supposedly died...
Twenty-three years ago.
And the woman walking away had just smiled...
