CHAPTER 8 – The Mastermind Was Sitting Beside Them All Along

Daniel gripped his phone so tightly his knuckles turned white.

The message read only one sentence:

COME ALONE... OR YOUR SISTER DIES.

Before he could respond, the hospital lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the hallway.

People screamed.

Emergency alarms echoed through the building.

Three seconds later...

The backup generators roared to life.

When the lights returned—

Michael was gone.

Only his silver necklace remained on the floor.

Daniel picked it up with trembling hands.

Attached to it was a tiny note.

DON'T FOLLOW ME.

Too late.

Daniel sprinted through the emergency exit and into the parking garage.

Rain poured from the night sky.

He spotted a black SUV speeding away.

Inside...

Michael was fighting two masked men.

Without thinking, Daniel jumped into his car and gave chase.

Thirty Minutes Later...

The pursuit ended at an abandoned steel factory on the outskirts of the city.

Daniel entered alone.

The building was silent.

Rusted machines surrounded him like ghosts.

Then...

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

One spotlight switched on.

A woman stepped forward.

She was elegant.

Confident.

And looked almost exactly like Evelyn when she was young.

"My brothers..."

"It's nice to finally meet you."

Daniel stared.

"You're... our sister."

She smiled.

"My name is Sophia Carter."

Michael was tied to a steel chair behind her.

He wasn't injured.

He looked strangely calm.

Daniel frowned.

"What did you do to him?"

Sophia answered quietly,

"Nothing."

"He came willingly."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Michael slowly stood up.

The ropes fell to the floor.

They had never been tied.

Daniel's heartbeat stopped.

Michael looked at him with sadness.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I've known Sophia for five years."

The words hit Daniel harder than any bullet.

"You lied to me?"

"I wanted revenge."

Michael lowered his head.

"I blamed all of you."

Sophia stepped beside him.

"Richard didn't steal one childhood."

"He stole three."

"So Michael and I made a promise."

"We would destroy Carter Global together."

Daniel felt the world collapse beneath him.

"So every leak..."

"Every investigation..."

"Every scandal..."

Sophia nodded.

"That was us."

"But then..."

She looked toward the hospital in the distance.

"Mom took a bullet for Michael."

"For the first time..."

"We realized the only real monster..."

"...was Richard."

Daniel whispered,

"So why kidnap Michael?"

Sophia smiled sadly.

"Because someone else got here first."

At that exact moment...

A loud metallic click echoed behind them.

Daniel slowly turned around.

Richard Carter stepped out of the shadows.

His prison uniform was gone.

Instead, he wore a black suit.

Behind him stood nearly twenty armed mercenaries.

The detective...

Two security guards...

Even one of the board members...

All pointed their guns at the three siblings.

Richard laughed.

"Did you really think I built an empire without a backup plan?"

Daniel stared in disbelief.

"You escaped."

Richard smiled.

"I was never arrested."

"The police commissioner..."

"The judge..."

"The prosecutor..."

"They've all worked for me for years."

Sophia's confident expression finally disappeared.

Richard slowly raised a remote control.

"I've hidden explosives beneath Carter Global Headquarters."

"If I can't own the company..."

"No one will."

Daniel shouted,

"There are hundreds of people inside!"

Richard shrugged.

"Not for much longer."

He placed his thumb over the red button.

Then Lily's small voice echoed from behind him.

"Grandpa..."

"You forgot one thing."

Everyone turned.

Lily stood in the doorway holding a tablet.

On the screen was a live video call.

Millions of viewers were watching.

Every word...

Every confession...

Every threat...

Had been broadcast live across the world.

Richard's smile vanished.

The little girl looked him straight in the eyes.

"You just confessed... to everything."

Within seconds...

Sirens surrounded the factory from every direction.

Helicopters filled the sky.

Federal agents stormed the building.

Richard looked around in panic.

For the first time in his life...

There was nowhere left to run.

He laughed one final time.

"You think you've won?"

He pressed the red button.

Nothing happened.

Daniel looked at Lily.

She smiled.

"I switched his remote with the TV remote while he was yelling."

The room fell silent.

Even the agents couldn't hide their smiles.

Richard dropped to his knees.

The empire he had stolen...

The lies he had built...

The family he had destroyed...

Had all been defeated by the one person he never considered a threat.

A six-year-old little girl.

Three months later...

Richard Carter was sentenced to life in prison.

Every stolen asset was returned.

Evelyn became Chairwoman of Carter Global once again.

Daniel became CEO—but with one promise:

"No employee in this company will ever be treated with fear again."

Michael accepted a position leading the company's charitable foundation.

Sophia chose not to join the business.

Instead, she opened a nonprofit organization to help children separated from their families.

As for Lily...

She kept the old blue cleaning cloth Mrs. Evelyn had used on the day everything changed.

It hung inside the CEO's office in a glass frame.
