CHAPTER 6 – The Bullet That Was Never Meant for Him

The gunshot echoed through the boardroom.

Then...

Silence.

For one horrifying second, nobody moved.

Lily screamed.

"Grandma!"

Daniel turned and saw Evelyn collapse to the marble floor.

A crimson stain spread across her white blouse.

She had stepped in front of Michael at the exact moment Richard pulled the trigger.

"No!" Daniel roared.

He dropped to his knees, pressing both hands against the wound.

"Evelyn... stay with me!"

Michael stood frozen.

The woman he had spent twenty-three years searching for...

...had just taken a bullet to save his life.

Richard stared at the gun in disbelief.

"I... I didn't mean..."

Before he could finish, three security officers tackled him to the ground.

The pistol slid across the floor.

Board members shouted for an ambulance.

Someone called the police.

Someone else locked every exit.

The empire Richard had built was collapsing before his eyes.

Twenty Minutes Later...

Doctors rushed Evelyn into emergency surgery.

Daniel and Michael sat outside the operating room without speaking.

For the first time in their lives...

The brothers sat side by side.

Strangers by circumstance.

Family by blood.

After several minutes, Michael finally broke the silence.

"You hate me, don't you?"

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"I hate the years we lost."

Michael looked away.

"My adoptive parents were good people."

"They loved me."

"But they died believing I had been abandoned."

Daniel felt tears burning in his eyes.

"Our mother never stopped looking for you."

Michael swallowed hard.

"I know."

"I found her letters."

"What letters?"

Michael opened a worn leather backpack.

Inside were dozens of unopened envelopes.

Every single one had the same handwriting.

To My Son... Wherever You Are.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Evelyn had written one letter every year for twenty-three years.

Birthdays.

Christmases.

Graduations she never witnessed.

Dreams she never got to share.

Not one letter had ever reached Michael.

Richard had intercepted every single one.

At that moment...

The lead detective walked into the hospital waiting room.

"Mr. Daniel Carter?"

Daniel stood.

"We've searched your father's private residence."

"And?"

The detective placed a thick evidence box on the table.

"We found hidden documents..."

"...but that's not the shocking part."

He removed a sealed envelope marked:

OPEN ONLY IF RICHARD CARTER IS ARRESTED.

Everyone stared.

Inside was a handwritten confession.

Richard admitted to fraud...

Kidnapping...

Forgery...

Corporate theft...

And manipulating Daniel's entire life.

But the final paragraph made Daniel's blood run cold.

"If you're reading this..."

"...then you've already discovered Michael."

"But there's something none of you know."

"Michael isn't the child you should be afraid of."

"There was another baby in that hospital..."

"And that child is still alive."

Daniel looked up in disbelief.

Michael whispered,

"Another baby?"

The detective slowly unfolded one last page.

It contained only a hospital identification number...

And one chilling sentence.

"Find Patient 317 before they find the Carter family."

At that exact moment...

Daniel's phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

He answered.

A calm female voice whispered only six words.

"I'm your sister... and I'm coming home."

The line went dead.

Daniel and Michael looked at each other in complete shock.

Neither of them had ever known...

They had a sister.
