CHAPTER 2 – The Woman Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Daniel couldn't breathe.
The elevator doors remained open.
"Stop!"
Security froze.
Mrs. Evelyn slowly turned around.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Daniel's hands trembled.
"My mother died before Lily was born."
Mrs. Evelyn looked into his eyes.
"That's what your father wanted you to believe."
The hallway exploded with whispers.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"No... this is impossible."
Mrs. Evelyn reached into the pocket of her faded work uniform.
She carefully unfolded a yellowed photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
On the back were four handwritten words.
For my son, Daniel.
His knees nearly gave out.
The handwriting...
It matched every birthday card his father had ever claimed his late mother wrote before she died.
His entire childhood suddenly felt like a lie.
Mrs. Evelyn wiped away a tear.
"I never abandoned you."
"I was forced to disappear."
Daniel shook his head violently.
"Who forced you?"
Before she could answer...
The elevator doors opened again.
An elegant man in an expensive suit stepped inside.
Every executive instantly recognized him.
Richard Carter.
Daniel's father.
His face turned pale the moment he saw Evelyn.
"You..."
"I told you never to come back."
The old woman looked at him with heartbreaking calm.
"I kept my promise."
"I stayed away."
"But you couldn't stop your granddaughter from finding me."
Richard suddenly shouted,
"Security! Get her out of this building!"
Instead...
Three members of the board stood up.
"No."
One of them slowly placed a thick folder on the conference table.
"For twenty-three years..."
"...we've been waiting for this meeting."
Daniel stared at the folder.
Across the front, in bold red letters, were the words:
THE REAL OWNER OF CARTER GLOBAL
And beneath it...
EVELYN CARTER
The woman he had fired less than five minutes earlier...
...wasn't just his mother.
She owned everything.

And Richard Carter's greatest secret was finally about to destroy the empire he stole.
END OF CHAPTER 2... The truth is only getting darker.
