CHAPTER 1 – "THE JOKE THAT DESTROYED A WEDDING"

No one expected the happiest day of Emily Carter's life to become the most humiliating moment she had ever experienced.

The luxurious Crystal Gardens Resort sparkled beneath thousands of golden lights. Fresh white roses lined the marble walkway, violins played softly in the background, and more than three hundred guests filled the elegant ballroom.

Everyone believed Emily and Ryan Bennett were the perfect couple.

Ryan was handsome, charming, and successful—a rising entrepreneur with a smile that could convince almost anyone to trust him.

Emily had spent nearly a year planning every tiny detail of their wedding.

The custom-designed gown had cost over thirty thousand dollars.

Her grandmother's diamond earrings had been carefully polished for the ceremony.

Every flower, every candle, every song had a special meaning.

She wanted this day to be unforgettable.

She had no idea Ryan wanted exactly the same thing…

…but for a completely different reason.

Earlier that morning, while Emily was getting ready, Ryan stood outside with his three closest friends.

One of them laughed.

"Are you really going to do it?"

Ryan grinned.

"Absolutely."

Another friend pulled out his phone.

"This video will explode online."

Ryan chuckled.

"She takes herself way too seriously. Relax... she'll laugh later."

They all burst into laughter.

None of them noticed that one of the catering waiters silently walked past and accidentally overheard every word.

Hours later...

The ceremony was perfect.

Ryan looked deeply into Emily's eyes while saying his vows.

"I promise to protect you."

"I promise to honor you."

"I promise to love you forever."

Emily smiled through tears.

She believed every word.

The guests applauded.

Some even whispered that it was the most romantic wedding they'd ever attended.

After dinner, the photographer gathered everyone outside near the enormous marble fountain.

The sunset painted the sky orange and pink.

"This is going to be your most beautiful photo," the photographer said.

Ryan wrapped his arm around Emily's waist.

She leaned against him, completely relaxed.

The photographer counted.

"Three..."

"Two..."

"One..."

Ryan smiled.

Then...

He suddenly shoved her with both hands.

Emily screamed.

Her heels slipped across the wet stone.

She fell backward into the icy fountain with a deafening splash.

Water exploded into the air.

Her wedding dress instantly absorbed dozens of gallons of water.

Her veil floated away.

Her makeup streamed down her face.

The expensive bouquet drifted across the surface.

For a few horrifying seconds...

Nobody moved.

Then...

Ryan started laughing.

Loudly.

"Oh my God!"

"You should see your face!"

"It was just a prank!"

His friends doubled over laughing.

Several guests immediately lifted their phones.

Some recorded.

Others laughed so hard they nearly dropped their champagne glasses.

Emily struggled to climb out.

Her soaked dress weighed nearly fifty pounds.

Her hands trembled.

Her mascara mixed with tears.

She stared at her husband.

"Why...?"

Ryan shrugged.

"Come on."

"It was funny."

"Don't be so dramatic."

The laughter grew louder.

Emily slowly looked around.

Not one person came to help her.

Not one.

Until...

An elderly woman wearing a simple navy-blue suit quietly stepped forward through the crowd.

Without saying a word...

She removed her expensive cashmere coat...

and gently wrapped it around Emily's shaking shoulders.

The entire garden suddenly became silent.

Ryan frowned.

"Who invited her?"

Nobody answered.

Because almost everyone recognized the woman.

And the color instantly disappeared from Ryan's face...
