CHAPTER 10 — THE LETTER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Exactly one year after Ethan's conviction, life at the Hawthorne Estate had settled into something Nora once believed she would never have again.

Peace.

Every morning, little Lily raced across the gardens with her tiny golden retriever puppy while Jonathan watched from the porch, smiling at the granddaughter he had once believed he would never meet.

The nightmares had almost disappeared.

Almost.

Then one rainy Tuesday morning, a plain white envelope arrived.

No return address.

No stamp.

Only five handwritten words.

For Nora. Open Alone.

Mr. Callahan frowned.

"I don't like this."

Neither did Jonathan.

But Nora opened it anyway.

Inside was a single page.

Nora,

There is something I never told anyone—not even my attorney.

The money wasn't the biggest crime.

Someone else helped me.

Someone inside your family's company.

Someone you trust.

They're still there.

Don't let Lily inherit what I almost destroyed.

— Ethan

The room fell silent.

Jonathan slowly lowered the letter.

"No..."

Mr. Callahan looked disturbed.

"He could be lying."

Nora shook her head.

"No."

"If Ethan wanted revenge, he would've named someone."

"He didn't."

"That means he's afraid."

Later that afternoon, Nora visited Ethan in prison.

It was the first time they had seen each other since the sentencing.

He looked thinner.

Older.

Humbler.

He didn't smile.

He didn't even ask about himself.

Instead, he looked toward a photograph Nora carried of Lily.

"She looks happy."

"She is."

"I'm glad."

The words sounded genuine.

For the first time...

There was no manipulation.

Only regret.

Ethan leaned closer.

"You think I stole everything."

"I did."

"But someone taught me how."

Nora's heartbeat quickened.

"Who?"

"I never knew his real name."

"He called himself..."

The Custodian.

"He handled wealthy families."

"He found hidden trusts."

"He created shell companies."

"He erased money."

"He approached me before we were married."

Nora froze.

"What?"

"He knew about your inheritance years before I did."

"He said your family had secrets worth billions."

"He promised he could help me take control."

Nora stared at him.

"You expect me to believe this?"

Ethan looked away.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"I expect him to come after you next."

As Nora left the prison...

She had the strange feeling someone was watching her.

Across the parking lot...

A black sedan quietly pulled away.

Inside...

A man in a gray suit smiled.

"So..."

May you like

"The Hawthorne girl finally knows my name."
