CHAPTER 13 — THE FINAL TRAP

The photograph of Lily changed everything.

For the first time in decades, Jonathan Hawthorne wasn't thinking like a businessman.

He was thinking like a father.

And a grandfather.

"No meetings."

"No interviews."

"No public appearances."

He looked directly at Nora.

"From this moment on, Lily never leaves our sight."

Nora nodded.

She had survived betrayal.

She had survived childbirth alone.

But she would never survive losing her daughter.

Meanwhile...

Federal investigators created the largest task force in the agency's history for a financial criminal.

Not because of the money.

Because of the pattern.

Thirty-two years.

Nine countries.

Forty-seven shell corporations.

Hundreds of stolen identities.

The mysterious figure known only as The Custodian had quietly destroyed wealthy families across the world, always without leaving fingerprints.

The Hawthornes were simply the only family that had finally fought back.

Three days later...

Nora received a phone call.

The voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"You've done well."

Nora instantly recognized it.

"The Custodian."

Jonathan silently activated the recording system.

"What do you want?"

A soft chuckle came through the speaker.

"I've never wanted your money."

"Then why us?"

"Because your grandmother ruined my life."

The room went silent.

"What are you talking about?"

"Margaret Hawthorne believed justice mattered."

"She exposed my father."

"He died in prison."

"My family lost everything."

"So I decided something."

"If I couldn't destroy Margaret..."

"I would destroy every generation that came after her."

Nora's heart pounded.

"So Ethan..."

"Was simply useful."

"And Diane?"

"Even more useful."

"You manipulated all of them?"

"I never forced anyone."

"They chose greed."

"I simply opened the door."

The line went dead.

The FBI traced the call.

An abandoned train station.

By the time agents arrived...

He was gone.

Again.

But he had left something behind.

A single chess piece.

The black king.

Jonathan stared at it for several seconds.

Then suddenly smiled.

"I know where he'll go."

Everyone looked at him.

"He always finishes the game..."

"...where it began."

The next morning...

Hundreds of officers surrounded the abandoned Hawthorne Steel Factory—the place where Jonathan's father had built the family fortune more than fifty years earlier.

Inside the enormous warehouse...

The Custodian stood alone beneath rusted steel beams.

He wasn't running anymore.

He was waiting.

"Welcome home, Jonathan."

Jonathan stepped forward.

"So it really was you."

The old man smiled.

"No."

"It was always your family."

"You simply refused to see it."

Then something unexpected happened.

The Custodian slowly lowered his weapon.

"I'm tired."

Thirty-two years of revenge suddenly seemed to disappear from his face.

"I won."

Jonathan frowned.

"No."

"You lost everything."

The old man's eyes drifted toward a family photograph lying on the ground.

Nora.

Jonathan.

Lily.

A complete family.

Something he had never had.

For the first time...

The Custodian cried.

As police surrounded him...

He quietly whispered,

"I spent my entire life trying to make your family feel my pain."

He looked at Nora.

"But all I created..."

"...was my own prison."

Without resistance...

He placed the gun on the floor.

The longest manhunt in the agency's history ended without another shot being fired.
