CHAPTER 8 — DIANE'S FINAL SCHEME

While Ethan waited for trial...
Diane refused to surrender.
She blamed everyone except herself.
The judge.
The police.
Mr. Callahan.
Most of all...
Nora.
"If she had just obeyed my son..."
"None of this would've happened."
Her obsession grew darker every day.
Then she discovered something that made her smile.
Jonathan Hawthorne was alive.
If Jonathan had returned...
Perhaps the Hawthorne fortune could still be manipulated.
She requested a private meeting.
Against Mr. Callahan's advice...
Jonathan agreed.
"I've spent thirty years hiding."
"I'm done hiding."
Diane entered the estate wearing expensive clothes she could no longer afford.
She forced a warm smile.
"Jonathan..."
"I've always admired your family."
Jonathan calmly poured tea.
"You've mistaken me for someone polite."
The smile disappeared from Diane's face.
"I came to negotiate."
"There is nothing to negotiate."
"You have a granddaughter now."
Jonathan nodded.
"I do."
"And I also have lawyers."
Diane leaned forward.
"What if I tell the press your disappearance wasn't heroic?"
Jonathan remained silent.
"What if I say you abandoned your pregnant wife?"
Still nothing.
Then Jonathan quietly slid a folder across the table.
Diane opened it.
Inside were recordings.
Phone transcripts.
Emails.
Private investigators' reports.
Every conversation she had ever had encouraging Ethan to steal from Nora.
Every insult.
Every manipulation.
Every financial instruction.
Jonathan smiled politely.
"I've been collecting evidence against the people who destroyed my family for thirty years."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"You were much easier to investigate than international criminals."
Diane's face turned white.
"You... recorded me?"
"No."
"You recorded yourself."
He tapped the phone resting on the folder.
"You were remarkably proud of your crimes."
The next morning...
National news exploded again.
NEW EVIDENCE IMPLICATES MOTHER IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD
Police arrived at Diane's apartment.
This time...
No one rescued her.
As officers placed handcuffs around her wrists...
She screamed one sentence over and over.
"I only wanted the best for my son!"
A reporter quietly replied,
"No..."
"You wanted control."
The words echoed across every television screen.
That evening...
Nora sat on the estate balcony holding Lily while Jonathan watched the sunset.
"You know..."
Jonathan said softly,
"Your grandmother always believed kindness wasn't weakness."
Nora smiled.
"I finally understand."
"How?"
"Because kindness doesn't mean allowing people to destroy you."
Jonathan nodded proudly.
May you like
His daughter had become stronger than anyone could have imagined.
