CHAPTER 6 — THE COURTROOM RECKONING

The courthouse steps were packed.

Television cameras.

Reporters.

Former employees.

Curious citizens.

Everyone wanted to witness Ethan Carter's first appearance.

Gone was the expensive tailored suit.

Gone were the luxury watches.

Gone was the confident smile.

He entered wearing a wrinkled gray jacket borrowed from his attorney.

Across the room...

Nora arrived carrying Lily in her arms.

No designer dress.

No makeup.

Just quiet confidence.

The courtroom became silent.

Even the judge noticed.

The prosecutor stood.

"Your Honor..."

"The evidence includes forged financial documents, witness testimony, electronic records, surveillance footage, and banking transactions totaling over eight million dollars."

Large screens illuminated the courtroom.

One by one...

Every forged signature appeared.

Every illegal transfer.

Every hidden account.

Every lie.

Then came the hotel video from Cancún.

Ethan laughing beside the pool.

Diane saying,

"Let her give birth alone."

Gasps spread through the courtroom.

The prosecutor looked toward the jury.

"While his wife was preparing to give birth..."

"The defendant celebrated after stealing nearly her entire inheritance."

Even Ethan couldn't look at the screen.

Diane suddenly stood.

"My son only did what I told him!"

The courtroom froze.

Her attorney grabbed her arm.

Too late.

She continued screaming.

"I told him to move the money!"

"I told him Nora didn't deserve it!"

"I told him she'd never find out!"

The judge slammed the gavel.

"Order!"

But the damage was done.

Every microphone captured her confession.

Reporters raced outside before the hearing had even ended.

Later that afternoon...

The judge denied Ethan's request for bail.

Flight risk.

Financial fraud.

Witness tampering concerns.

As deputies placed handcuffs around his wrists...

He looked toward Nora one last time.

"I'm sorry."

She met his eyes calmly.

"I believe you are."

"But you're apologizing because you got caught..."

"...not because you abandoned your family."

He lowered his head.

For once...

He had no excuse.

As the courtroom emptied, Mr. Callahan approached Nora.

"Justice has finally begun."

She looked down at Lily, who wrapped a tiny hand around her finger.

"No."

Nora smiled softly.

"This isn't the end."

"It's the beginning."

Outside, reporters shouted questions as Ethan was led into a prison transport van.

But the biggest surprise was still waiting.

That same evening, Mr. Callahan received a phone call from an unlisted international number.

A deep, older voice spoke only one sentence.

"I've seen Nora on the news..."

"...tell my daughter I'm finally coming home."

Mr. Callahan slowly closed his eyes.
