CHAPTER 4 – Emma Opened Locker 317… What She Found Changed Her Family Forever

Emma barely slept.

The old brass key never left her hand.

The mysterious phone call echoed in her mind.

"Don't trust your mother anymore."

By sunrise, she was standing inside Union Central Station.

Locker 317 sat at the end of a deserted hallway.

Her heart pounded.

She slid the brass key into the lock.

Click.

The metal door slowly swung open.

Inside wasn't money.

It wasn't jewelry.

It was a dusty leather suitcase wrapped in a faded blue blanket.

Emma carefully unzipped it.

Her breath caught.

There were hundreds of family photographs she'd never seen before.

Pictures of her as a baby...

Pictures of her mother...

And standing beside them in every photo was an elegant silver-haired woman smiling proudly.

Written on the back of one picture were four chilling words:

"They took everything from us."

Beneath the photos lay several passports.

All issued under different names.

One passport belonged to Emma's grandmother.

But the issue date shocked her.

It had been renewed...

Just six months ago.

Emma whispered,

"She's really alive..."

Then she found one final item.

A small cassette recorder.

With trembling fingers, she pressed PLAY.

Static filled the tiny speaker.

Then an elderly woman's voice spoke.

"If you're hearing this, they found me before I could come home."

Emma froze.

"The Blackwell family wasn't the enemy."

"The people hunting our family were inside the government... and someone very close to you helped them."

Emma's eyes widened.

"No..."

The recording continued.

"I trusted only one person."

"Your father."

"But someone betrayed us."

The tape suddenly crackled.

A loud bang echoed in the background.

The old woman screamed.

Then...

The recording ended.

Emma stood motionless.

Someone hadn't just hidden her grandmother.

Someone had kidnapped her.

And whoever did it...

Had been protecting that secret for over twenty-five years.

Just then, Emma's phone rang again.

This time the caller ID showed only one word.

MOM.

Emma answered without speaking.

Her mother was crying.

"Emma..."

"You opened the locker, didn't you?"

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

Then her mother whispered something that made Emma's blood run cold.

"They know where you are."

Before Emma could respond, the station lights suddenly went dark.

The emergency alarms began blaring.

Footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.

Slow...

Heavy...

Getting closer.

Emma looked toward the station entrance.

Three men in black suits were walking straight toward Locker 317.

One of them held a photograph.

It was Emma's face.

The tallest man smiled.

"There she is."

"Take the suitcase..."

"And don't let her leave alive."

Emma grabbed the recorder and the suitcase before sprinting down the platform.

Behind her...

The men gave chase.

As a speeding train roared into the station, Emma jumped through the closing doors at the very last second.

The men reached the platform too late.

Breathing heavily, Emma looked out the train window.

One of the men calmly lifted a phone to his ear.

Then he smiled.

"We lost the girl..."

"But we still have her grandmother."

Emma's heart stopped.

Her grandmother wasn't just alive.

May you like

She was still a prisoner.

And now Emma had unknowingly declared war against the people who had kept her hidden for decades.
