CHAPTER 5 – Emma Rescued Her Grandmother… But The Woman She Saved Wasn't The Victim Everyone Believed

The train doors slammed shut.
Emma collapsed into a seat, clutching the leather suitcase against her chest.
Her heart pounded so hard she could barely breathe.
Outside the window, the three men in black suits disappeared into the distance.
For the first time since her wedding...
She thought she was safe.
She was wrong.
An hour later, Emma arrived at a small motel on the edge of the city.
She locked every door.
Closed every curtain.
Then she replayed her grandmother's recording.
This time, she noticed something she had missed before.
Just before the tape ended...
A church bell rang exactly seven times.
Emma froze.
She rewound the recording.
Again.
Seven bells.
Then the distant whistle of a cargo train.
She searched old railway maps and church records all night.
Only one place matched both sounds.
An abandoned monastery beside an old freight line, nearly fifty miles outside the city.
The next morning...
Emma drove there alone.
The monastery looked deserted.
Broken stained-glass windows reflected the gray sky.
Vines covered the ancient stone walls.
As she stepped inside, she heard a faint cough.
"Hello?"
No answer.
Then...
A whisper.
"Emma..."
She spun around.
Behind a rusted iron door sat an elderly woman with silver hair.
Thin.
Weak.
But unmistakably the woman from the photographs.
"Grandma..."
Tears filled Emma's eyes as she forced the lock open.
The old woman stumbled into her arms.
"I knew you'd find me."
Emma held her tightly.
"I'm taking you home."
But instead of smiling...
Her grandmother grabbed Emma's wrist with surprising strength.
"We don't have much time."
"You must listen carefully."
Emma nodded.
"The men hunting us..."
"They don't work for the government anymore."
"They work for someone much richer."
Emma frowned.
"Who?"
Before the old woman could answer...
Footsteps echoed through the monastery.
The black-suited men had found them.
Bullets shattered the stained-glass windows.
"Get down!" Emma shouted.
She pulled her grandmother behind a stone altar as gunfire erupted through the building.
Dust filled the air.
Pieces of ancient stone crashed around them.
Emma spotted a narrow tunnel beneath the altar.
"This way!"
They crawled through the dark passage just as the gunmen stormed into the sanctuary.
After several terrifying minutes, the tunnel opened into a forest behind the monastery.
Emma and her grandmother escaped.
Safe...
At least for the moment.
That night, they hid inside a remote cabin.
Emma finally asked the question that had haunted her for days.
"Who is behind all this?"
Her grandmother stared silently into the fireplace.
Then she whispered,
"The person leading them..."
"...is someone you've trusted your entire life."
Emma's stomach tightened.
"My mother?"
The old woman slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Someone even closer."
She reached into her coat and pulled out a faded photograph.
It showed Emma as a little girl...
Standing beside Adrian's father.
And another man.
A man Emma recognized instantly.
Her own father.
But written across the back of the photo were six terrifying words.
"Only one of us is innocent."
Emma looked up in confusion.
"My father died twenty years ago."
Her grandmother's eyes filled with tears.
"No, Emma."
"He didn't die."
"He disappeared..."
"...because he became the leader of the organization hunting us."
Emma's blood turned to ice.
Everything she had believed about her family had just collapsed.

And somewhere in the darkness...
Her father had been watching her every move all along.
