CHAPTER 6 – Emma Finally Faced Her Father… But He Wasn't The Monster Everyone Feared

Emma couldn't breathe.
She stared at the old photograph again and again.
Her father...
Alive?
For twenty-five years she had visited a grave that belonged to an empty coffin.
"You're lying," she whispered.
"My father died in a car accident."
Her grandmother slowly shook her head.
"No accident ever happened."
"The crash was staged."
Emma stepped backward.
"Why would anyone fake his own death?"
Her grandmother looked toward the window, making sure no one was outside.
"Because he discovered something that powerful people were willing to kill for."
Before dawn, a black SUV stopped outside the cabin.
Emma immediately grabbed a flashlight, ready to run.
But her grandmother remained calm.
"Don't."
"They're not here to hurt us."
The driver's door opened.
A tall man wearing a dark coat stepped out.
His face was hidden beneath a baseball cap.
He slowly removed it.
Emma froze.
The man looked almost exactly like the old family photographs.
The same blue eyes.
The same scar above his left eyebrow.
The same gentle smile she barely remembered from childhood.
Tears rolled down Emma's face.
"Dad...?"
The man nodded silently.
"I've waited twenty-five years to hear you call me that again."
Emma ran toward him.
Then stopped only inches away.
"No."
"If you're really my father..."
"Why didn't you come back?"
His smile disappeared.
"Because every day I stayed away..."
"...was another day you stayed alive."
Emma's anger exploded.
"I grew up believing you abandoned me!"
"I cried at your grave every birthday!"
"I hated myself for not remembering your face!"
Her father lowered his head.
"I know."
"And I hated myself for letting you believe it."
Inside the cabin, he finally revealed the truth.
Twenty-five years earlier, he and Adrian's father had uncovered an international money-laundering network involving politicians, judges, and billionaire executives.
When they tried to expose it...
The organization struck first.
Witnesses disappeared.
Investigators were murdered.
Emma's grandmother was kidnapped.
The evidence vanished.
To protect his family, Emma's father staged his own death and secretly built a network of former investigators dedicated to destroying the organization from within.
"I became the monster they feared..."
"So they would stop hunting you."
Emma finally understood.
Her father had never abandoned her.
He had sacrificed his entire life to keep her alive.
But before anyone could say another word...
A satellite phone on the table began ringing.
Her father answered.
His expression immediately changed.
"What?"
He stood up so suddenly that the chair fell backward.
Emma's heart raced.
"What happened?"
He looked directly into her eyes.
"They've taken your mother."
"What?"
"They left only one message."
He handed Emma the phone.
A distorted voice echoed through the speaker.
"You have twenty-four hours."
"Bring us the suitcase..."
"Or your mother dies."
The line went dead.
Emma gripped the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Her father quietly opened a hidden compartment beneath the cabin floor.
Inside were military-grade maps...
Encrypted files...
And dozens of passports.
He looked at Emma with complete seriousness.
"You have two choices."
"You can keep running..."
"Or you can fight beside me."
Emma wiped away her tears.
For the first time since the wedding, there was no fear left in her eyes.
Only determination.
She reached into the hidden compartment...
Picked up a black file marked PROJECT PHOENIX...
And opened it.
The first page contained photographs of every member of the organization.
Emma's blood froze when she reached the final picture.
It wasn't a criminal.
It wasn't a politician.
It wasn't a billionaire.
It was someone she had trusted more than anyone else.
Someone who had comforted her after the wedding...
Someone who had helped her every step of the way.
Beneath the photograph were three chilling words:
"The Inside Traitor."
May you like
Emma whispered the name in disbelief.
"...Impossible."
