CHAPTER 8 – Emma Finally Met Her Real Mother… And The Woman Who Raised Her Pulled The Trigger

Emma's heart pounded so violently she thought she might faint.

She replayed the video.

Again.

And again.

The woman looked exactly like her mother.

The same voice.

The same smile.

The same tiny birthmark near her left eye.

"How is this possible?" Emma whispered.

Her father took a deep breath.

"Because the woman who raised you..."

"...isn't your mother anymore."

Silence filled the abandoned warehouse where they had taken shelter.

Her grandmother slowly removed an old photograph from the suitcase.

It showed a young woman holding baby Emma.

The woman looked almost identical to the one in the video...

Except for one detail.

Her eyes were green.

Not brown.

Emma compared the photo to the woman she had known all her life.

She had never noticed.

Never questioned it.

"My real mother..."

"What happened to her?"

Her grandmother closed her eyes.

"She disappeared the same night I was kidnapped."

"We searched for years."

"But we never found her."

Emma felt tears streaming down her face.

"So... who raised me?"

Her father answered quietly.

"A woman trained to replace her."

That evening, the encrypted flash drive revealed one final clue.

A GPS location.

An isolated estate hidden deep in the mountains.

Project Phoenix Headquarters.

Emma's father smiled grimly.

"This is where it ends."

Before midnight...

Emma, her father, and her grandmother quietly approached the heavily guarded mansion.

Security cameras covered every entrance.

Armed guards patrolled the grounds.

Then something unbelievable happened.

The front gate slowly opened.

No alarms.

No resistance.

Almost as if...

Someone wanted them to come inside.

The mansion was eerily silent.

Portraits covered the walls.

Emma stopped in front of one enormous painting.

It showed the founders of Project Phoenix.

Her blood froze.

One face was unmistakable.

Adrian's grandfather.

Another...

Was her own grandfather.

The two families had never been enemies.

They had built the organization together.

A slow clap echoed through the hall.

Emma turned around.

The woman she had always called "Mom" stepped out of the darkness.

Elegant.

Calm.

Holding a pistol.

"You've come farther than I expected."

Emma's voice trembled.

"Who are you?"

The woman smiled.

"My name isn't Sarah Carter."

"It's Victoria Kane."

"I've spent ten years pretending to be your mother."

Emma's knees weakened.

"Where is my real mother?"

Victoria tilted her head.

"Still alive."

"For now."

Emma stepped forward.

"Take me to her."

Victoria laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"You were never the target."

"Your mother was."

Before Emma could react...

Victoria raised the pistol.

She didn't aim at Emma.

She aimed at Emma's father.

BANG!

The gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Emma screamed.

Her father collapsed to the marble floor.

Blood spread across his shirt.

"DAD!"

Emma rushed toward him.

Victoria smiled coldly.

"Now you're finally alone."

But as Emma held her father's hand...

He weakly slipped something into her palm.

A tiny silver key.

His final words were barely audible.

"...Basement..."

"...Room... Seven..."

Then his hand fell still.

Emma's world shattered.

Victoria turned and walked toward a steel elevator.

Before the doors closed, she looked back one final time.

"If you want your real mother..."

"...come find me."

The elevator disappeared underground.

Emma opened her trembling hand.

Attached to the silver key was a tiny metal tag engraved with three chilling words:

SUBJECT E-01

Her grandmother stared at the key in horror.

Tears filled her eyes as she whispered,

"No..."

"Emma..."

"Your real mother isn't a prisoner..."

"She's the original founder of Project Phoenix."

Emma looked toward the elevator doors.

Everything she thought she knew had been another lie.

And somewhere beneath the mansion...

Her real mother had been waiting for her all along.
