CHAPTER 8 — The Mother Behind Every Betrayal

Michael couldn't move.

His mother stood in the doorway, perfectly calm, as if nothing had happened.

The pistol in her hand never wavered.

Lily clung tightly to Michael's arm.

"Daddy..."

"I'm scared."

Michael stepped in front of her.

"Mom..."

"Ryan said you were kidnapped."

She smiled.

"He wanted you to believe that."

Victoria slowly reached for her own weapon.

Before she could draw it—

CLICK.

Three red laser sights appeared on her chest.

Hidden snipers surrounded the cabin.

Michael's mother shook her head.

"Please don't make them shoot."

Victoria slowly raised her hands.

"You've been working with Project Phoenix all these years?"

His mother laughed softly.

"No."

"I didn't work for Project Phoenix."

"I created it."

The words struck Michael harder than any bullet.

"What?"

His mother walked toward the fireplace and placed an old family photo onto the table.

It showed Michael and Ryan as children.

Behind them stood their father...

wearing the same silver wolf pin.

"Your father believed Project Phoenix could eliminate corruption by controlling it."

"But power changes people."

"When he tried to destroy the organization..."

"They murdered him."

Michael's voice trembled.

"So Ryan..."

His mother nodded.

"Ryan didn't betray the family."

"He stayed inside Project Phoenix to destroy it from within."

"Every crime you've blamed on him..."

"...was part of a mission to expose the people at the top."

Michael's entire world collapsed.

The villain...

had actually been protecting him.

Then the front door burst open.

Ryan stumbled inside, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound.

He collapsed onto the wooden floor.

Michael rushed toward him.

"Ryan!"

Ryan grabbed Michael's jacket with blood-covered hands.

"I don't have much time..."

He pulled a small black memory card from inside his jacket.

"This contains every secret."

"The names."

"The bank accounts."

"The murders."

"The real leader."

Michael looked at the tiny card.

"So it's over?"

Ryan slowly shook his head.

"No..."

"You still don't understand."

"The leader was never Father."

"It wasn't Mother."

"It wasn't the police chief."

Ryan turned toward Lily.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I'm sorry..."

"I tried to keep her safe."

Michael frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Ryan whispered four words that froze everyone in the room.

"Lily is the heir."

Silence.

Michael stared at his daughter.

Lily looked back at him...

confused.

Ryan coughed violently before speaking one final sentence.

"The empire... was built for her."

His hand fell lifelessly to the floor.

Ryan Carter was dead.

At that exact moment, the memory card automatically activated.

A hidden projector inside the cabin flickered on.

An elderly man appeared on the wall.

Michael gasped.

It was his father.

Alive.

He looked directly into the camera and calmly said:

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I've been dead long enough."

"But I was never murdered."

"I chose to disappear."

The screen faded to black.

Michael stood frozen.

Everything he had believed for the past ten years...

May you like

was a lie.

THE END... OR WAS IT?
