CHAPTER 6 — The Recording Emily Left Behind

Hours later, police detectives entered the hospital.
Victoria confidently denied every accusation.
"There is no proof."
Daniel lowered his head.
Maybe she was right.
Emily was gone.
The letters proved manipulation—but not attempted murder.
Then the nurse returned one final time.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
"I almost forgot."
She handed him an old flash drive labeled only with Emily's handwriting.
'Play this only if Lily finds her father.'
Daniel plugged it into a nearby laptop.
Emily appeared on the screen.
She looked exhausted, her hair thinner from illness, but her eyes were steady.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I didn't survive."
Daniel covered his mouth.
Tears streamed down his face.
Emily continued.
"Daniel... I never hated you."
"I hated the lie you were forced to believe."
She held up a folder.
"I recorded every meeting."
The screen changed.
Hidden-camera footage.
Victoria Ashford sat across from a hospital administrator.
Daniel's heart stopped.
"I don't care what treatment the child needs," Victoria said on the recording.
"Delay it."
"By the time he discovers she exists..."
"...it won't matter anymore."
The room fell silent.
The detectives immediately seized the laptop.
Victoria's confidence vanished.
She lunged toward the computer, screaming,
"Delete it!"
But it was too late.
One detective placed handcuffs around her wrists.
Vanessa broke down in tears as her mother was led away.
Daniel didn't even look at Victoria.
He ran straight back to Lily's hospital room.
When he entered, Lily opened her tired eyes and smiled weakly.
"Daddy..."
"You came back."
Daniel knelt beside her bed, holding her tiny hand with both of his.
"I'll never leave you again."
Lily smiled peacefully.
Then, barely above a whisper, she said the words that shattered everyone in the room.
"I know..."
