CHAPTER 2 – THE RECORDING NO ONE KNEW EXISTED

As the sound of approaching sirens echoed outside, Daniel relaxed.

Everything was going according to plan.

He carefully wiped a knife handle.

He scattered broken glass across the floor.

Then he gently placed Emily's fingerprints exactly where he wanted them.

A flawless crime scene.

Or so he believed.

Emily suddenly stopped crying.

Her terrified expression disappeared.

Instead...

She smiled.

Daniel frowned.

"What's so funny?"

Emily looked directly into his eyes.

"You forgot about my father's anniversary gift."

Daniel froze.

"What gift?"

"The security system."

His face turned pale.

Emily slowly nodded toward a tiny black object hidden above the kitchen cabinets.

"It doesn't just record video."

"It records every word."

Daniel's heartbeat exploded.

Without another thought, he rushed toward the device.

Too late.

The tiny blue light was still blinking.

Everything had been captured.

His confession.

His threats.

His plan.

Even the moment he admitted she had discovered the insurance fraud.

Panic replaced confidence.

Daniel ripped the camera from the wall and smashed it onto the marble floor.

Emily laughed through her tears.

"You really think destroying it changes anything?"

His voice cracked.

"What do you mean?"

"The recordings don't stay in the camera."

She smiled wider.

"They upload automatically to a secure cloud server every thirty seconds."

For the first time that night...

Daniel looked afraid.

Then Emily delivered the final blow.

"And my lawyer receives a copy if the system detects violence inside the house."

At that exact moment...

The front door burst open.

Police officers rushed inside.

Behind them stood an older man in a gray suit.

Daniel recognized him instantly.

It was Richard Lawson—the family's attorney.

Richard calmly held up his phone.

"I've already watched the entire recording."

Daniel's knees nearly gave out.

He had spent years building the perfect lie.

It took less than thirty seconds...

...for the truth to destroy everything.
