Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM COUP

The morning sun over Manhattan brought no warmth to the glass-walled offices of Hayes Vision on Madison Avenue.

Liam walked into the executive boardroom at 8:00 AM, expecting his usual pre-market briefing. Instead, he found his Chief Financial Officer, Marcus Vance, and three senior venture capital partners sitting in absolute silence.

The heavy mahogany table was empty except for a single manila folder.

"What is this?" Liam demanded, dropping his briefcase. "Marcus, why are the Lightspeed partners here? The Series D isn't due for three months."

Marcus Vance looked older than his fifty years. He didn't stand up. He pushed the manila folder across the table with a finger.

"Open it, Liam," Marcus said evenly.

Liam scoffed, sliding into his leather ergonomic chair. "We closed the London deal yesterday. The valuation is at two billion. I don't have time for internal audits—"

"Read page four," Marcus interrupted, his voice dropping the polite corporate cadence he had used for a decade.

Liam frowned, flipping the folder open. His eyes scanned the legal headers, and the blood instantly drained from his face.

It wasn't an audit. It was a forensic asset trace and a patent assignment verification.

"This... this is impossible," Liam stammered, his fingers gripping the paper. "The core algorithm for Hayes Vision’s neural-mapping software... it’s registered under... under..."

"Under OC Holdings LLC," Marcus supplied coldly. "And who owns OC Holdings, Liam? Your ex-wife. Every single foundational line of code that made Hayes Vision a multi-billion-dollar tech titan was written, patented, and legally assigned to Olivia Carter during your first three years in that Queens apartment. When you drafted her divorce settlement six months ago, your corporate lawyers used a standard boilerplate release. They never asked her to sign intellectual property waivers for the pre-foundational IP because you assumed she was just a supportive spouse who made your coffee."

The room was suffocatingly quiet. One of the venture capitalists, a veteran Silicon Valley shark named David Sterling, leaned back and crossed his arms.

"The market opened twenty minutes ago, Liam," Sterling said. "Once the press broke the story about you abandoning your pregnant wife last night, our institutional investors started pulling out. Combined with the fact that your ex-wife legally holds the intellectual property rights to the core software... Hayes Vision is currently worth zero dollars. We are freezing your executive authority effective immediately."

Liam stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the carpet.

"You can't do that!" he shouted, veins bulging at his temples. "I built this company! I am the face of Hayes Vision!"

"You were the face," Marcus said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Olivia was the engine. And as of eight o'clock this morning, the engine has filed an emergency injunction to repossess every server, patent, and asset belonging to OC Holdings."
