Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW OF THE EMPIRE

The quiet hum of the private jet engine was the only sound cutting through the altitude of thirty-five thousand feet.
Olivia sat across from Viktor Vance in the Gulfstream G650, reviewing a digital prospectus on her tablet. Outside the reinforced windows, the clouds rolled endlessly like white velvet dunes under the afternoon sun.
"The European acquisition goes live on Monday," Viktor said, leaning back with a cup of black coffee. "With OC Holdings absorbing the remaining infrastructure of what used to be Hayes Vision, you now control the entire neural-mapping network across three continents. Wall Street is calling it the quietest, most brutal hostile takeover in tech history."
Olivia didn't look up from her tablet. "It wasn't a hostile takeover, Viktor. It was a reclamation. Everything built under that name was founded on patents registered in my name before Liam ever stepped foot in a venture capital office."
"Call it what you want, but the tabloids are still obsessed," Viktor chuckled, sliding a copy of the weekend Financial Gazette across the mahogany table.
The headline glared in bold print: THE GHOST OF MADISON AVENUE: WHERE IS LIAM HAYES?
A grainy paparazzi photo accompanied the article, showing Liam walking out of a hardware store in Ohio wearing a faded gray zip-up hoodie, his shoulders hunched against a biting wind. He looked ten years older, the sharp, confident smirk of the billionaire tech founder replaced by the hollow, vacant expression of a man whose reflection had deserted him.

Olivia stared at the image for a long moment. There was no surge of triumph, no bitter satisfaction—just the dull, distant realization of how fragile human ambition truly was when it wasn't anchored to anything real.
"Let him be," Olivia said quietly, sliding the newspaper aside without reading the text. "He’s where he belongs now. Back in the margins."
