Chapter 2 - THE SECRET UNDER THE FLOORBOARDSThe paramedics arrived within minutes, immediately stabilizing Elisa with oxygen and an IV line before rushing her into the ambulance. Adrián refused to leave her side, but Officer Morales held him back by the arm.

"Mr. Salgado, you cannot leave yet," Morales said, her face grim. "Look at what my partner just found."

Officer Ramos had descended into the hidden concrete bunker beneath the shed. He used his pocket knife to cut the tamper-evident tape on the largest red biohazard cooler. When he lifted the lid, cold vapor billowed out, smelling sharply of chemical preservatives and ice.

Inside were specialized medical transport vials containing human tissue samples, human blood units, and high-grade pharmaceutical drugs marked CLINICAL TRIAL USE ONLY - NOT FOR RESALE.

Adrián’s head spun. "What is this? My father built this house thirty years ago... there was never a cellar here!"

"It was dug out recently," Ramos said, shining his light along the fresh concrete pillars supporting the house's foundation. "And look at the labels on these transport cases."

Adrián leaned closer. Printed neatly across the side of every single cooler box was a corporate logo he recognized instantly: Vanguard Biomedical Solutions.

It was the exact same pharmaceutical firm where his younger brother, Bruno, worked as an entry-level logistics clerk.

Outside in the hallway, Bruno heard the officer shout the company name. In a split second of panic, Bruno bolted for the front door.

"Stop right there!" Officer Morales yelled, dashing through the patio door into the house.

Bruno didn't make it to the gate. He tripped over the patio steps, falling face-first onto the slick tiles. Morales was on him immediately, kneeling on his back and snapping hand-shackles around his wrists.

Graciela dropped her theatrical tears and shrieked like a wounded animal. "Leave him alone! He didn't do anything! He was just trying to help us pay the mortgage! It’s all her fault! If that witch hadn't gone poking around where she didn't belong, none of this would have happened!"

Adrián walked slowly out of the rain and into the house, staring at his mother as if she were a total stranger.

"You locked my pregnant wife in a dark room without water for forty-eight hours... because she found your illegal medical stash?" Adrián asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying, quiet fury.

Graciela sneered, wiping rain from her face. "She was going to call the police on your own brother! She was going to ruin his life! Family comes first, Adrián! But you... you’ve always chosen that worthless woman over us!"
