Chapter 8 - A NEW BEGINNING & THE FINAL TWISTSix months later.
The quiet coastal town of Puerto Vallarta was warm and bright. The air smelled of salt and sweet sea breeze—a world away from the dark, rain-soaked concrete of Zapopan.
Adrián stood on the porch of a small, beautiful beachfront bungalow he had bought after selling the old house and liquidating all tied assets.
From the porch, he watched Elisa sitting on a blanket on the soft sand, cradling their two-month-old baby boy, Mateo. She looked healthy, radiant, and happy, her laughter ringing out over the sound of the crashing waves.
Adrián walked down to the sand and sat beside her, kissing her forehead before gently lifting Mateo into his arms. The baby stared up at him with deep, curious brown eyes.
"He looks just like you," Elisa said softly, leaning her head against Adrián’s shoulder.
"He has your strength," Adrián replied, kissing his son’s tiny forehead. "We made it, Elisa. We’re finally safe."
Just then, the postman walked up the wooden steps of the porch, leaving a small stack of mail in the box before waving and walking away.
Adrián walked up to grab the mail. Among the utility bills and baby magazines was a plain white envelope with no return address.
He opened it.
Inside was a single printed photograph and a handwritten index card.
The photograph showed Adrián and Elisa sitting right there on the beach, taken from behind a nearby palm tree—just a few minutes ago.
Adrián’s heart stopped. He turned the index card over.
Written in neat, elegant blue ink was a message:
"Did you really think Julian Mercer was the boss, Adrián? He was just our driver. Congratulations on the baby boy. We'll be in touch when he turns one."
Adrián looked up frantically, scanning the crowded beach, the boardwalk, and the distant streets.
