Chapter 4 - THE THIRD MAN IN THE SHADOWSThe next morning, Lead Detective Vargas met Adrián at the Zapopan Police Station. The detective led him into a small briefing room covered in photos of the seized evidence.

"Mr. Salgado, what we uncovered at your residence goes far beyond a domestic dispute or illegal storage," Detective Vargas said, tapping a red folder on the desk. "The chemical vials found in your basement contain experimental stem-cell therapies and high-grade oncology drugs stolen directly from Vanguard Biomedical's research facility."
"Bruno is just an inventory worker," Adrián said, leaning forward. "He doesn't have the clearance or the brains to organize something like this."
"You're right," Vargas agreed. "Bruno broke under interrogation about an hour ago. He confessed that he was paid $5,000 a month just to use your mother's house as a drop-off point. The man supplying the stolen trial drugs is a senior executive at Vanguard—a man named Julian Mercer."
Adrián froze. "Julian Mercer? I know that name. He’s the head of regional logistics... he’s the main client who contracted my company for the industrial park in León!"
Detective Vargas’s eyes narrowed. "Think about that carefully, Mr. Salgado. Who arranged for your work assignment in León to be rescheduled?"
A cold chill ran down Adrián's spine.
"Mercer," Adrián whispered, realization dawning like a violent slap to the face. "Mercer gave me the contract. He made sure I was sent out of town for four days so they could execute a massive shipment transfer through my house!"
"Exactly," Vargas said. "Mercer knew you would be away. What he didn't count on was your client finishing early, or your wife catching them in the act."
"What about my mother?" Adrián asked, his voice bitter. "Did she know?"
Vargas pushed a transcript across the table. "Your mother knew everything. In fact, according to Bruno’s confession, Graciela was the one who suggested using your basement in the first place. She’s been receiving black-market kickbacks for over six months to pay off her massive secret gambling debts at the local underground casinos."

Adrián buried his face in his hands. His entire family life had been a lie built on greed, deceit, and betrayal.
"There’s one more thing," Detective Vargas added soberly. "Julian Mercer found out about the police raid on your house last night. He has vanished. And based on wiretaps we just intercepted... he believes your wife can identify his face to the federal prosecutors."
