CHAPTER 7 — THE CHILD THEY WERE REALLY AFTER

Emily's blood ran cold.

She stared at the pink ribbon lying on the police evidence table.

It belonged to Lily.

Not the missing boy.

Damien grabbed the detective by the arm.

"Where did you find this?"

"In the abandoned vehicle."

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

"If they have Lily..."

The detective interrupted.

"They don't."

Everyone froze.

"What do you mean?"

The detective pulled up traffic camera footage.

The video showed the black SUV stopping at a deserted gas station.

A masked man opened the rear door.

Instead of Lily...

The kidnapped boy jumped out by himself.

He wasn't escaping.

He was distracting the kidnappers.

As the criminals chased after him...

A little girl wearing a yellow hoodie quietly slipped out the opposite side.

Lily.

She ran into the darkness alone.

Emily burst into tears.

"My baby..."

The detective zoomed in further.

Lily wasn't running randomly.

She was heading toward one place.

The abandoned Blackwood steel factory.

Damien's face changed instantly.

"They're not after the children."

"They're after what's hidden beneath that factory."
