CHAPTER 7 – The Man Who Planned Their Lives Before They Were Born

Richard Harper's smile never reached his eyes.

"You really thought your grandmother was smarter than me?"

His mercenaries surrounded Ethan and Emily, rifles aimed at their heads.

Richard slowly picked up the black folder containing the ownership documents.

"For twenty-one years," he said, "I've searched every bank, every lawyer, every safe house your father ever used."

He laughed softly.

"And in the end... you brought it straight to me."

Ethan clenched his fists.

"You murdered our parents."

Richard shrugged.

"They gave me no choice."

"They wanted to expose everything."

"The bribery..."

"The offshore accounts..."

"The people I paid to disappear."

Emily's voice trembled with rage.

"You killed your own brother."

Richard stepped closer.

"No."

"I built an empire."

"He tried to destroy it."

He pointed the gun at Ethan's chest.

"History only remembers the winner."

Just as Richard prepared to pull the trigger...

A loud metallic click echoed through the vault.

Every mercenary suddenly froze.

One by one...

Red laser dots appeared on their chests.

Richard frowned.

"What is this?"

A deep voice thundered through hidden speakers.

"Security Protocol Alpha Activated."

The massive steel doors slammed shut.

Emergency lights flashed crimson.

Then dozens of heavily armed tactical officers emerged from concealed tunnels surrounding the vault.

Richard's smile vanished.

The lead officer removed his helmet.

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Mr. Harper..."

"We've been waiting twenty-one years for you."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"Who are you?"

The man handed him a worn leather badge.

United States Department of Justice.

"My name is David Ross."

"Your father asked us to protect this evidence."

"We couldn't move until the legal heirs opened the vault."

Richard backed away in panic.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

David smiled.

"Everything inside this vault has been livestreaming to a federal evidence server since the moment you walked in."

He pointed toward the ceiling.

"The confession you just made..."

"...was recorded."

Richard's face turned white.

For the first time in his life...

The man who controlled senators, judges, and billion-dollar corporations realized he had just convicted himself.

But before the agents could arrest him...

Richard slowly reached into his jacket.

He wasn't reaching for another gun.

He was holding a small black remote.

He smiled one last time.

"If I lose Harper Industries..."

"...no one gets it."

He pressed the button.

Deep beneath the vault...

A deafening countdown began.

SELF-DESTRUCT SYSTEM ACTIVATED.

10... 9... 8...

The entire underground bunker started shaking violently.

David shouted,

"Everyone out! NOW!"

And Ethan realized the greatest secret of Harper Industries wasn't the fortune...

May you like

It was what Richard was willing to destroy to keep it hidden.

To be continued...
