CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN IN THE RED VEIL

The rain hit the cathedral steps like shattered glass.

Emily clutched Lily's hand so tightly that the little girl looked up in confusion.

"Mommy... are we going home?"

Emily forced a smile.

"Soon, sweetheart."

But she knew they weren't going anywhere.

Not yet.

Because somewhere in the crowd...

The woman in the crimson veil had vanished.

And according to the anonymous message...

She knew something that could destroy them all.

Police officers rushed to secure the cathedral.

Detective Michael Ross barked orders.

"Nobody leaves!"

Every guest was questioned.

Every vehicle searched.

Every security camera seized.

Yet there was no trace of the mysterious woman.

It was as if she had dissolved into the storm.

Samuel Hayes stared at the phone in Emily's trembling hands.

The message had already disappeared.

No sender.

No number.

Nothing.

"It was routed through a military-grade encrypted network," Samuel muttered.

"Someone with enormous resources sent this."

Emily looked back toward Adrian.

He was sitting calmly in the back of a police cruiser.

Handcuffed.

Smiling.

As the cruiser pulled away...

Adrian looked directly at Lily through the rain-speckled window.

He mouthed four silent words.

"She isn't yours."

Emily froze.

"No..."

Her heart pounded violently.

He couldn't mean—

Samuel saw her expression.

"What did he say?"

Emily couldn't answer.

Because deep inside...

A fear she had buried for eight years suddenly came rushing back.

That night...

The police placed Emily and Lily inside a secure government safe house.

Two armed officers guarded every entrance.

Every window was monitored.

Ross promised,

"No one gets in."

Emily wanted to believe him.

At exactly 2:17 a.m...

The lights went out.

Every monitor turned black.

The backup generator never activated.

One officer reached for his radio.

Static.

Then...

The emergency hallway door slowly creaked open.

Footsteps echoed.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

One officer raised his weapon.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

A shadow crossed the hallway.

The officer fired.

Three shots.

Silence.

When the lights returned...

The hallway was empty.

Except for a small red veil lying on the floor.

Pinned beneath it...

A photograph.

Emily picked it up with shaking hands.

It showed Lily as a newborn.

But Emily had never seen this picture before.

Someone had been holding the baby.

Only the person's hands were visible.

On the back, one sentence was handwritten.

"She was never supposed to survive."

Emily nearly collapsed.

Samuel took the photo.

His eyes widened.

"This blanket..."

Emily frowned.

"What about it?"

"It wasn't sold in hospitals."

"It was issued only in one private maternity clinic."

Emily's face went pale.

"The clinic Adrian shut down?"

Samuel slowly nodded.

"No."

"It belonged to someone much more powerful."

Meanwhile...

Across town...

Adrian was transported to a federal detention center.

The convoy consisted of four armored vehicles.

Police helicopters circled overhead.

No chances.

No mistakes.

Or so they thought.

As the convoy crossed an abandoned bridge...

A fuel tanker suddenly jackknifed across both lanes.

The lead vehicle slammed on its brakes.

Then—

Two black helicopters appeared from the darkness.

Smoke grenades exploded across the bridge.

Automatic gunfire erupted.

Officers dove for cover.

Within ninety seconds...

It was over.

When the smoke cleared...

Three officers were wounded.

Two vehicles burned.

The prison transport truck stood open.

Its handcuffs lay on the floor.

Adrian Blackwood...

Had disappeared.

Again.

Detective Ross stared at the empty transport cage.

"This wasn't a rescue."

Samuel arrived moments later.

"No."

Ross looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Samuel pointed toward the broken handcuffs.

"They were unlocked from the inside."

Ross frowned.

"Impossible."

Samuel quietly whispered,

"Adrian didn't escape."

"He was being protected."

Somewhere in the darkness...

A private jet lifted into the stormy sky.

Inside sat Adrian.

Across from him...

The mysterious woman in the red veil slowly removed her mask.

Adrian smiled.

"I knew you'd come."

The woman looked into his eyes and replied,

"You've failed."

"And now..."

May you like

"I'll finish what should have happened eight years ago."
