Chapter 2 - The Hostage UltimatumAlessandro grabbed Victor by the lapels of his suit, hauling him up until their eyes were inches apart.

âSpeak!â Alessandro roared, his composure shattering. âWho has you by the throat?!â
Victor collapsed against the wall, clutching his chest as ragged sobs tore from his throat. âThree days ago⊠my sister Elena and her three young children vanished from their home in Florence. I thought they were on vacation until I received a live video feed on an encrypted satellite channel.â
Victor pulled out a secondary, plain burner phone from his inner jacket pocket and handed it to Alessandro with trembling hands.
Alessandro tapped the screen. A live stream loaded instantly.
The image made Alessandroâs blood run cold. In a dim, concrete basement room somewhere unknown, a woman was bound to a wooden chair with heavy chain links. Next to her were three childrenâthe eldest no more than ten years oldâtied together with heavy rope. Suspended directly above their heads was a commercial demolition charge wired to a digital countdown clock.
The clock read: 03 : 42 : 19.
Three hours, forty-two minutes remaining.
âThey called themselves the Phantom Syndicate,â Victor wept, covering his face. âA ghost faction backed by the Russian cartel. They told me if I didnât place the explosive under your study desk and ensure all six capos were present for the 8:00 p.m. meeting, they would detonate the charge in Florence remotely. They were monitoring my every move, Alessandro! If I warned you, theyâd kill my sister!â
Marco Rossi gasped, looking at the tablet in horror. âBoss⊠the bomb under your desk wasn't meant just to kill us. It was a dual-trigger mechanism. The moment your desk bomb exploded at 8:20 p.m., it was supposed to send a ping back to their server to disarm the bomb over Elenaâs children!â
The sick, twisted logic of the trap unfolded before them. The enemy had set up a horrific forced choice: execute Alessandro and his top commanders, or allow an innocent mother and three young children to be blown to pieces thousands of miles away in Italy.
âWhy didnât you come to me, Victor?â Alessandro asked, his voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of anger and grief. âWe could have found another way!â
âThere was no time!â Victor cried out. âThey had eyes on my car, my apartment, my phone! They knew every step I took! I decided⊠I decided I would plant the bomb, let the capos die, and then I was going to put a bullet through my own head right after Elena was freed! I was ready to die tonight, Alessandro! I chose to die!â
Alessandro stood tall, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned ghostly white. The room fell into a terrifying silence as the rain pounded against the windows like a war drum.
âYou foolish bastard,â Alessandro whispered. âYou thought you had to choose between your family and me. But you forgot one fundamental rule.â
Alessandro pulled his customized gold-plated Beretta from his holster and racked the slide with a sharp, decisive metallic click.
âNobody touches a Moretti family member and lives to see the dawn. Marco!â

âYes, Boss!â
âTrack the IP signal of that satellite broadcast. I don't care if you have to burn down half of Europeâs server infrastructure. Find me the exact coordinates of that basement in thirty minutes!â
