Chapter 3 - Shadows of FlorenceThe ticking clock on the burner phone was relentless: 02 : 55 : 10.

Inside the war room of the Moretti estate, screens flickered with satellite heat maps, signal triangulations, and dark web tracking protocols. Richard Hale, the former explosive specialist who had disarmed the desk bomb, sat next to Marco, analyzing the video feed frame by frame.

“Look at the brickwork behind Elena,” Richard pointed out, zooming in on a damp stone wall visible in the corner of the camera angle. “That’s traditional Tuscan terracotta masonry, but the mortar decay suggests an industrial structure built in the late 19th century near a major body of water.”

“Cross-reference with abandoned wine cellars and old textile mills within a fifty-mile radius of Florence,” Alessandro ordered, his voice sharp as steel.

Suddenly, the screen on the burner phone flickered. The live video stream cut out, replaced by a distorted silhouette of a man wearing a ballistic mask. A synthesized, cold voice echoed through the speaker.

“Good evening, Alessandro Moretti,” the voice rasped. “It seems your meeting was
 unexpectedly delayed.”

Alessandro stepped up to the microphone, his eyes burning with fury. “You cowardly snake. You step out into the light and face me like a man, or I promise you, I will hunt down everyone who ever knew your name.”

The masked figure chuckled—a hollow, chilling sound. “Save your cinematic threats, Alessandro. Your brother Victor failed his task. He thought he could outsmart us by delaying the blast. But because the C4 under your desk did not detonate at 8:20 p.m., the secondary automated protocol has been engaged.”

The camera shifted back to Elena and her three children. Above their heads, the digital clock suddenly accelerated, shaving off an entire hour!

01 : 15 : 00.

“You now have seventy-five minutes,” the voice mocked. “Seventy-five minutes before Elena Romano and her three children are turned into dust. If you want the disarming code, you will deliver Victor Romano to the abandoned docks of Pier 42 in Manhattan—alone, unarmed, and in chains. Hand him over to my men, and I will release the disarm sequence for Florence.”

“Why Victor?” Alessandro demanded.

“Because Victor possesses something far more valuable than you realize,” the voice replied slyly. “He holds the master key to the Moretti offshore ledger—the six billion dollar vault your late father hid in Swiss accounts. Bring him to Pier 42, or watch his sister die live on screen.”

The call disconnected.

Victor slumped against the table, his eyes filled with total despair. “The ledger
My father gave me the decryption key on his deathbed as a failsafe. That’s what they were after all along! The bomb under your desk was just a distraction to break your empire while they extracted the cash!”

Alessandro didn’t hesitate. He grabbed his tactical vest and turned to his core team.

“Marco, prepare two teams. Team Alpha comes with me to Pier 42. Team Beta—deploy our private jet to Florence immediately. We are playing a two-front war tonight.”

“Boss, going to Pier 42 unarmed is suicide!” Marco protested. “It’s an obvious trap!”

“I know it’s a trap,” Alessandro said, a dark, dangerous smile creeping across his lips. “That’s why I’m walking right through the front door.”
