Chapter 3 - Vanessa’s True Motive

By 2:00 AM, Daniel was sitting in a holding cell at the 17th Precinct, stripped of his designer jacket, tie, and pride. He had used his one phone call to contact Vanessa, begging her to post his bail using her personal savings or contact a top defense attorney.

Instead, Vanessa was sitting in a luxury suite at the Plaza Hotel—a suite booked under her own secret bank account—packing three rimowa suitcases.

Her phone buzzed continuously on the nightstand. Daniel Calling. She ignored it, pressing decline without a second thought.

What Daniel never knew was that Vanessa Cole was never a naive mistress swept off her feet by a wealthy businessman. She was an independent corporate asset auditor hired eighteen months ago by an anonymous third-party competitor to dismantle Whitmore & Hayes from the inside out.

She had pushed Daniel to demand the quick divorce settlement. She had urged him to book the Sapphire Room at Aurum House. She had even selected the $640,000 sapphire necklace, knowing full well that an unapproved purchase of that magnitude on an enterprise card would instantly trigger automated federal anti-money laundering protocols.

She zipped her luggage, pulled on a pair of dark sunglasses, and checked her encrypted messaging app.
