Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Gala

Two weeks passed. Daniel was living in a run-down residential motel near Queens, stripped of his luxury car, his credit cards, and his social standing. Vanessa had completely vanished into thin air—her phone disconnected, her apartment cleared out, and her social media accounts deleted.

Desperate to restore his reputation and confront me, Daniel used his last remaining pawned watch to buy a forged ticket to the annual Manhattan Founders Gala—the biggest corporate event of the year, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He knew I would be there.

When he slipped through the velvet ropes, unkempt and wearing a rumpled tux, he found me standing near the center stage surrounded by reporters, investors, and city officials.

"EMILY!" Daniel roared, pushing past two security guards who immediately moved to intercept him. "Tell them to lift the freeze! You did this! You and your father set me up!"

The crowd gasped as camera flashes went off in rapid succession. I slowly turned around, holding a glass of sparkling water, utterly unbothered.

"Daniel," I said softly, my voice echoing through the microphone hooked to my lapel. "You did this to yourself the moment you thought loyalty was something you could steal."

"You ruined me for a lie!" he screamed, his eyes bloodshot. "Vanessa took everything! She disappeared with the offshore accounts!"

"She didn't take everything, Daniel," I replied smoothly, taking a step toward him. "She took exactly what she was hired to take."
