CHAPTER 5: "The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead Walked Out of the Fire"

The gunshot echoed through the underground vault.
Emily instinctively threw herself over the little boy as bullets shattered the glass around them.
The emergency lights flickered red.
People screamed.
One of the attorneys collapsed after being shot in the shoulder.
"Run!" he shouted.
Emily grabbed the boy's hand and sprinted through a narrow maintenance tunnel behind the vault.
Behind them came heavy footsteps.
"They can't leave alive!" someone yelled.
The mysterious men weren't trying to steal the evidence.
They wanted to erase it forever.
Just as they reached a dead end, Emily realized there was nowhere left to go.
The little boy looked at the old leather notebook in his hands.
"Grandpa told me there was another door."
"What door?"
"He said... if I was ever scared... I should trust the wall with the eagle."
Emily searched the concrete walls.
Then she saw it.
A tiny bronze eagle hidden beneath years of dust.
She pressed it.
With a deep rumble, part of the wall slowly slid open.
Behind it was a forgotten underground passage leading to an abandoned railway tunnel.
Before they could escape...
The leader of the gunmen appeared.
He raised his pistol.
"This is where your story ends."
Emily closed her eyes and held the little boy tightly.
BANG!
But the bullet never reached them.
The gunman froze.
A second shot had rung out.
He slowly looked down at the blood spreading across his chest before collapsing onto the ground.
Everyone turned toward the darkness.
A tall man stepped forward, holding a smoking handgun.
His gray beard, scarred face, and piercing blue eyes made him look like a ghost.
The little boy burst into tears.
"Grandpa..."
Emily stared in disbelief.
"It... it can't be."
The old man smiled faintly.
"They buried an empty coffin five years ago."
"I let the world believe I was dead."
Silence filled the tunnel.
The attorney who had followed them whispered,
"Mr. Carter..."
"The founder is alive."
The old billionaire looked directly at Emily.
"I faked my death because I discovered the board planned to murder my entire family."
"I needed to know who I could trust."
He glanced toward the pile of evidence.
"And now..."
"They've exposed themselves."
Suddenly, dozens of police officers stormed into the tunnel from the opposite entrance.
Behind them were agents from the FBI, carrying federal warrants.
The mysterious gunmen immediately surrendered.
But the old billionaire didn't celebrate.
Instead, he pulled one final sealed envelope from inside his coat and handed it to Emily.
"I've protected this secret for twenty years."
"If you open this..."
"You'll discover who betrayed us before Ryan was even born."
Emily slowly broke the seal.
She read the first line.
Her face instantly lost all color.
"No..."
"This... this is impossible."
The old billionaire closed his eyes.
"The real enemy..."
May you like
"...has been sitting on our board of directors this entire time."
