CHAPTER 8: "The Funeral Trap... And the Man Who Walked Out of His Own Grave"

Seven days later...
The world officially declared William Carter dead.
No body had ever been recovered.
No black box had been found.
Yet the government approved a symbolic funeral after investigators concluded the jet had crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
Thousands attended.
Politicians.
Billionaires.
Foreign investors.
Even international media broadcast the ceremony live.
Emily stood beside Jonathan and the little boy, staring at the empty black coffin.
Something felt wrong.
William was many things.
But he wasn't a man who accepted defeat.
As the priest began speaking, the little boy suddenly squeezed Emily's hand.
"Mom..."
"That man over there..."
Emily followed his finger.
A gardener wearing a green uniform stood beneath an old oak tree.
His face was hidden by a cap.
But he wasn't watching the funeral.
He was watching Emily.
The moment their eyes met...
He quietly touched his wristwatch.
Emily's heart skipped a beat.
"Sarah!"
She whispered into her microphone.
"The gardener!"
FBI agents rushed across the cemetery.
The gardener smiled...
Dropped his shovel...
And disappeared into the crowd.
"Stop him!"
People screamed as agents chased him through rows of marble graves.
Emily ran after them.
The man leaped over a stone wall and vanished into the cemetery's oldest section.
When Emily reached the end of the path...
She froze.
The gardener was gone.
Only an open grave remained.
Jonathan stared into the darkness.
"He couldn't have disappeared."
Then...
A loud mechanical sound echoed beneath the ground.
The grave was an elevator.
Hidden beneath the cemetery was a massive underground tunnel.
Emily, Jonathan, Sarah, and several FBI agents descended.
What they found left everyone speechless.
The tunnel stretched for hundreds of feet.
Luxury vehicles.
Weapons.
Computers.
Gold bars.
Stacks of cash.
Rows of fake passports.
It wasn't a bunker.
It was William Carter's secret headquarters.
On the largest screen in the room appeared one message.
WELCOME, EMILY.
Suddenly, every monitor turned on.
William Carter appeared.
Not from a recording.
Live.
He smiled calmly.
"I knew you'd find this place."
Emily glared at him.
"Where are you?"
William laughed.
"Closer than you think."
Behind Emily...
Someone began clapping.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Everyone turned.
Standing at the tunnel entrance...
Still wearing the gardener's uniform...
Was William Carter himself.
He slowly removed the fake beard...
The gray wig...
The contact lenses...
And smiled.
"You've been chasing a ghost."
"But ghosts..."
"...don't stay buried."
FBI agents raised their weapons.
"Don't move!"
William simply laughed.
"You still don't understand."
He pressed a small silver button hidden inside his ring.
The bunker doors slammed shut.
Steel barriers sealed every exit.
Emergency lights turned blood red.
Then a computerized voice echoed through the underground complex.
SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE ACTIVATED.
TEN MINUTES UNTIL TOTAL DETONATION.
Emily's blood ran cold.
William spread his arms.
"If I can't erase my crimes..."
"I'll erase everyone who knows them."
The little boy looked up at him with tears in his eyes.
"Why are you doing this?"
For the first time...
William's smile disappeared.
He looked at the child and quietly replied,
"Because monsters aren't born..."
"They're created."
But no one noticed one small detail.
As William spoke...
Jonathan Carter secretly slipped the brass key from the old vault into a strange lock hidden beneath the main control panel.
A hidden compartment slowly opened.
Inside...
Was one final envelope.
Across the front, Jonathan's late wife had written five chilling words.
"Open only if William returns."
Jonathan's hands began to shake.
"Emily..."
May you like
"You have no idea what's inside."
