CHAPTER 5 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MURDER

Three nights after Ethan was sent to prison...
Amelia received an unmarked package.
No return address.
No fingerprints.
Only one sentence typed on the front.
"If you want the truth... come alone."
Inside was a flash drive.
Her hands trembled as she plugged it into her laptop.
A hidden security recording appeared.
It was filmed six months before the yacht trip.
Ethan sat across from an elegant woman wearing a black diamond necklace.
Her face remained hidden in the shadows.
Then Amelia heard a voice she recognized instantly.
Her heart stopped.
It belonged to Victoria Caldwell—Ethan's mother.
"I don't care what it costs," Victoria said coldly.
"That woman and her baby can never inherit this family."
Ethan hesitated.
"She's my wife."
Victoria slammed a folder onto the table.
"Choose."
"Your future... or hers."
The video ended.
Amelia stared at the frozen screen, unable to breathe.
The mastermind had never been Ethan.
He had simply been the weapon.
The real architect of the murder had been the woman who smiled beside Amelia in every family photograph.
Before Amelia could process what she had seen...
Her phone rang.
Unknown Number.
She answered.
A calm female voice whispered,
"You watched the video."
Amelia froze.
"Victoria..."
"I warned Ethan not to fail."
A long silence followed.
Then Victoria laughed.
"You survived once."
"You won't survive twice."
The call disconnected.
At that exact moment...
Every light inside Amelia's beachfront mansion suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the entire house.
Her security alarms failed.
The surveillance cameras went offline one by one.
Then...
Footsteps echoed upstairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Amelia grabbed her son from his crib and hid inside the panic room.
On the security monitor powered by an emergency battery, she watched four masked men quietly searching every room.
One of them stopped in front of the nursery.
He smiled at the empty crib.
"He took the bait," he whispered into his radio.
A second voice answered,
"Mrs. Caldwell wants no survivors."
Tears filled Amelia's eyes as she held her son tightly against her chest.
She realized this nightmare had never been about money.
It was about erasing the last rightful heir to the Caldwell empire.
Then her phone vibrated again.
This time, it was a text message.
It contained only one photograph.
Ethan...
Still sitting inside his prison cell.
Beneath the picture were six chilling words:
"Even prison can't protect him anymore."
Amelia's blood ran cold.
If Victoria was willing to kill her own son to bury the truth...
Then no one was safe.

And somewhere inside the prison...
Ethan had just become the next target.
