CHAPTER 1 – The Stranger Who Never Smiled

Nobody in the diner knew who the rugged man sitting alone in Booth 7 really was.
He arrived just before noon, wearing an old leather jacket, dusty boots, and a face that looked like it hadn't smiled in years. He ordered nothing but a cup of black coffee and a slice of apple pie.
Customers whispered.
"He looks dangerous."
"I bet he hasn't paid his bills in months."
Even the cook joked that the man looked like he had escaped from prison.
But one waitress didn't laugh.
Emily had only worked at the diner for three weeks. She noticed something everyone else ignored—the man wasn't staring at the food. He was staring at an old photograph folded inside his wallet.
Every few minutes he opened it, looked at it with trembling hands, then quietly put it away.
When Emily served his coffee, she smiled.
"Long day?"
The man looked up, surprised.
"It's been fifteen years."
She frowned.
"Since what?"
He forced a smile.
"Since I lost everything."
Most people would have walked away.
Emily didn't.
She refilled his coffee without charging him and left an extra slice of pie on the table.
"You look like someone who could use a little kindness."
The man's eyes watered for the first time.
No one noticed.
Except the old dishwasher in the kitchen.
His expression suddenly changed.
He stared at the customer as if he had seen a ghost.
Later that afternoon, Emily found the man standing outside the diner, staring across the street at an abandoned building.
"You waiting for someone?" she asked.
He whispered only four words.
"I'm waiting for justice."
Before Emily could ask another question, three black SUVs pulled into the parking lot.
Men in expensive suits stepped out.
Every employee froze.
The manager rushed outside, terrified.

The strangers ignored everyone...
...and walked straight toward the mysterious customer.
