CHAPTER 4 – The Woman in the Photograph Was Still Alive

Emily couldn't breathe.
The police cars disappeared into the distance, taking Richard Voss with them, but his final words echoed in her mind.
"Ask him what really happened that night."
She slowly turned toward Jonathan.
His shirt was soaked with blood, yet he wasn't looking at his wound.
He was looking at her.
With fear.
Not fear of dying...
Fear of losing her again.
"Emily..." he said softly.
"I never lied about loving your mother."
"But you did lie about her being dead."
Jonathan closed his eyes.
After a long silence, he whispered,
"I lied because I thought she wanted us to believe she was gone."
Emily's heart pounded.
"What does that even mean?"
Jonathan reached into the pocket of his old leather jacket and pulled out a faded envelope.
It had never left his side.
Not once in fifteen years.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The ink had faded, but every word was still clear.
Jonathan...
If you're reading this, don't look for me.
They're watching us.
If I stay with you, they'll kill Emily.
The only way to save our daughter is to disappear forever.
Please forgive me.
—Sarah
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
"My mother... wrote this?"
Jonathan nodded.
"I searched every country I could think of. I hired the best investigators in the world."
"They all told me the same thing."
"Sarah vanished."
"No passport."
"No bank account."
"No phone."
"It was as if she'd never existed."
Just then, one of Jonathan's security officers rushed toward them, holding a tablet.
"Sir... we found something."
Jonathan frowned.
"What is it?"
The officer turned the screen around.
A live security camera from a private hospital.
The image froze everyone.
A woman with silver strands in her hair walked slowly through the hallway.
She looked older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably...
It was Sarah.
Emily covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Jonathan's hands trembled.
"Zoom in."
The officer enlarged the image.
Sarah wasn't alone.
She was pushing a wheelchair.
Sitting in that wheelchair...
Was a little boy.
About eight years old.
The boy looked directly into the camera.
He had Jonathan's blue eyes.
Emily stared in disbelief.
Jonathan whispered the words no father ever expected to say.
"That's... my son."
The room fell silent.
Fifteen years of searching had led Jonathan to one daughter...
Only to discover he had another child he never knew existed.

And somewhere inside that hospital...
Sarah had been hiding the biggest secret of all.
