CHAPTER 8 – The Last Betrayal Was Sitting Beside Him

The red laser sights danced across Jonathan's chest.
Sarah instinctively wrapped her arms around Emily and Ethan.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
Then...
A calm voice came through the darkness.
"Put the flash drive on the floor."
Jonathan tightened his grip.
"No."
The voice laughed.
"You still think this is about money."
"It's never been about money."
Suddenly, the emergency lights flickered back on.
The hallway glowed with a dim red light.
More than twenty armed mercenaries stood at both ends of the corridor.
Every escape route was blocked.
The police officers slowly lowered their weapons.
Jonathan frowned.
"What are you doing?"
One officer removed his badge...
...and dropped it onto the floor.
Then another did the same.
Within seconds, nearly half the officers had joined the mercenaries.
Emily felt her stomach drop.
"They're... working together."
Jonathan finally understood.
The corruption Richard had talked about wasn't inside the system.
It WAS the system.
The mercenary leader stepped forward.
He wasn't wearing a mask.
He smiled politely.
"Mr. Hale."
"My employer has admired your determination."
Jonathan narrowed his eyes.
"Who's your employer?"
The man simply replied,
"The only person you've trusted every single day."
Jonathan's heart skipped a beat.
At that exact moment...
His personal security chief, Daniel Brooks, slowly walked forward.
The man who had protected Jonathan for over ten years.
The man who had taken bullets for him.
The man Jonathan trusted more than anyone.
Daniel calmly pulled out his pistol...
...and pointed it directly at Jonathan.
Emily gasped.
"No..."
Jonathan stared at him in disbelief.
"You?"
Daniel nodded.
"I'm sorry."
"I was never hired to protect you."
"I was hired to make sure you never discovered the truth."
Sarah covered her mouth in horror.
"You betrayed us for money?"
Daniel shook his head.
"For family."
He pulled an old photograph from his pocket.
It showed Richard Voss standing beside a young boy.
"Richard wasn't my boss."
"He was my father."
The hallway erupted in shocked silence.
Jonathan finally realized why Richard had always been one step ahead.
Every investigation.
Every escape.
Every secret meeting.
Daniel had been leaking everything from inside Jonathan's own security team.
Then Daniel smiled.
"But there's one more secret."
He looked directly at Ethan.
"My father lied."
"Ethan isn't your youngest child."
Jonathan's face turned white.
"What did you just say?"
Daniel's voice was ice cold.
"The night Sarah disappeared..."
"She didn't escape with two children."
"She escaped with three."
Emily's eyes widened.
Sarah burst into tears.
"No... Please don't..."
Daniel continued without emotion.
"The third child was taken before sunrise."
"And that child..."
"...is standing in this hospital tonight."
Every person in the hallway slowly turned their heads toward the crowd.
One by one.
Until all eyes stopped on a young emergency room nurse...
Who suddenly froze.
She dropped the medical tray from her hands.
The silver necklace around her neck matched Emily's exactly.
May you like
And in a trembling voice, she whispered...
"Mom...?"
